My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Fire is a 7 and 1/2 year old inquisitive brood mom, who just arrived in Arizona from a greyhound farm. She is not cat or small dog tolerant.

My name is Fire, and I am a black girl greyhound with a striking white patch on my chest. I’m certainly enjoying this new place where I am living right now. The kennel has lots of other greyhounds to hang around with. I’ve tried to boss them around a little bit, but mostly I’m just wallowing in the ambiance here. There’s a big yard to explore and people here to visit and play with. They usually have treats which I have grown to relish! I’ve heard that things named “chickens” live here too, but I’d rather be friends with the people.

I’ve joined the choir here and Wanda said we all sing so well that we could be part of the Andrew Sisters (and Brothers), whoever they are.

I hear that I will be going to a foster home where there are treats and soft beds and people who will help me learn how to be a pet. Then, when I graduate from Foster Home, I will have my very own Forever home with Forever people. How cool is that?

FOSTER UPDATE:

Fire is adjusting well to living in a home. She is very well-behaved and sweet-tempered. While she is still “in her shell” a little bit, she is interacting with her fosters and coming out of her crate more. Fire has recently started lying on her foster’s feet, and she has started initiating play. Fire is very quiet and calm around the house, and is mostly a couch potato. While she is reserved, she does not seem to be fearful. She greets new people who come to the house.

Fire is a major tail-wagger! Almost every time her foster even looks at her she starts wagging! She plays peek-a-boo a lot, often peeking from around the corner, to see if there is something going on that she feels brave enough to join. Fire has cuddler tendencies that may grow as she settles in fully to her forever home. Fire loves her crate and has been left alone in the house, crated, for up to 4 hours and alone uncrated for about 3 hours. The fosters leave the crate open when they are home, so she is free to come and go, and she typically spends time in the crate of her own free will. She likes to collect toys and bring them into her crate with her.

Fire is house trained without a doggie door. She occasionally cries or barks when she sees other (non-greyhound) animals, when she needs to go outside, if she wants to get in the crate and the door has accidentally been closed, etc., but she is still pretty quiet overall. She enjoys walking and doesn’t pull on the leash. She rides well in a car, lying down after a few minutes.

Fire has an eye condition called pannus, and she is being treated for this with steroid eye drops. Otherwise she seems healthy. Fire is very wiggly when administering her eye drops, but otherwise she reacts well to being handled. She has been lifted into the car, and she has not minded being handled this way.

Fire would do well in a quiet home as an only pet, or with another medium or large dog buddy. She might be a bit dominant (she sometimes stands over the resident dog when he is lying on the floor), so it might be important that she be paired up with a dog that is secure and/or submissive.
