My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Tessa had been in the Oakland shelter 5 months when Dusty Paws pulled her into foster care in November 2015. Over the months, shy, sweet Tessa had become a favorite of staff and volunteers who worked with her. They provided this description:

"My name is Tessa and I'm about 3 years old. I'm not the kind of dog that falls in love with everyone immediately. I have to get to know you a little bit but once I do I'm loyal and loving. I'm also what they call an "old soul." I'm calm and wise and will listen to you when no one else will."

The shelter also provided a little instruction sheet on how to continue working with this gentle girl, noticing she is submissive but sweet, a little hand shy around the head and possibly more comfortable with women than men.

In her foster home, Tessa is doing well. She was shy at first but came around quickly. She is quiet, not much of a barker, and doesn't dig in the yard. She is very affectionate once she trusts you and she enjoys your attention. She is quite sensitive and responds best to gentle correction. Tessa is house trained. She doesn't disturb the resident birds, and may be okay with cats. Currently she is fostering with a smaller dog, Magoo. Although she is friendly with him, lounging with him on the couch, so far she does not attempt to play. She has no food aggression

Tessa appears to be a Labrador Retriever mixed with Mastiff and some other breed which gives her the white speckles. It is tempting to do a DNA test. She weighs about 80 lbs. She has had at least two litters of pups, but is now spayed as well as being up to date on vaccinations.

Tessa's confidence is improving every week. She seemed to enjoy her first adoption showing. She needs a quiet home with patient, gentle people, preferably adults. Another dog for companion would be fine.
