Here at Guardian Angel most of the animals we get in are in critical condition or in a life or death situation. I would like to share Tom Hanks story with you. He was a neighborhood stray that somebody brought to the vet to be euthanized. The vet office called us and asked if we would take him. I went and picked them up, he was this big old Tomcat and from the moment I brought him home he adjusted to our household with no problem. Two days later I got a call on an abused kitty in Detroit. It was below zero, snow and ice on the ground and this poor cat was under a car covered in blood. After bringing him ( Angelo) home from the vet I put him in a large cage. Angelo curled up and turned his head to the wall. He was so frightened he wouldn't eat or even stand he would just pee and poo where he laid. Everyday I would open his cage and try to work with him and everyday Tom Hanks would jump in Angelo's cage and touch him with his paw, lay next to him, wash him and nurture him. After a while Angelo started to return Tom Hanks affection. It was amazing to watch Tom work with Angelo jumping in and out of his cage as if showing Angelo it was okay to come out, coming up to me to be petted walking back to Angelo and back to me over and over. It was a long process but Tom Hanks or I never gave up on Angelo and now he is a loving cat, no longer afraid to be cuddled by a human. I don't know if I could have gained his trust without Tom Hanks help. They are now best friends and I hope to adopt them out together. Tom Hanks continues to work with new fosters that we bring in. He is an amazing kitty and I'm so glad that GAAR was there to save him from euthanization. What a waste of a beautiful heart it would have been.
