Meet ABIGAIL!! This super sweet 12 year old senior gal is looking for her forever home. Miss Abigail ended up at the shelter somehow, and we think she may have previously lived as an outside dog her whole life. She is currently very skinny, so we are working on getting her back up to a healthy weight. When Abigail first got to LFS, she did not care for other dogs at all, but now that she's been in a foster home, she has become more comfortable and has done well with other dogs. She was likely never socialized with any others before, so now she's had the chance to learn what other dogs are all about. Abigail is a super sweet dog who enjoys the company of people. She just needs someone to love her for the remainder of her golden years. Will that be you? Keep checking back for more updates on Abigail.

FOSTER UPDATE 4/12/16!! Abigail has been with her foster family since December and does great with kids and has been fine with other dogs. She has plumped up and is no longer the skin and bones she was when LFS first saved her. Abigail does have a bit of a hearing problem but does well and can be left in the house alone with no issues. She is looking for a forever home to live out the rest of her golden years! Please consider giving Abigail a home!

About Labrador Friends of the South, Inc.

About Our Rescue Group...

Labrador Friends of the South (LFS) is an incorporated, non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue and adoption of homeless Labrador Retrievers in the Southeast region. We are 501(c)(3) status.

LFS relies solely on donations, fundraising events and adoption fees to function and continue saving and placing homeless Labradors. We do not receive any state or federal funding. LFS is an all volunteer organization of people who give their time, effort, and love to protect the breed from the perils of pet over-population and irresponsible pet ownership. Our ultimate goal is to help these dogs find new, loving, forever homes.

The Labradors in our program receive veterinary care and temperament testing before being eligible for adoption. Since our goal is to place our Labradors in forever homes, we consider each Labrador’s history (if any), temperament, training and other skills, and energy level. We then assess each adopting family’s preferences, home environment, lifestyle, and personality in order to make the best possible match for a successful adoption.

Labrador Retrievers and Labrador Retriever mixes are the most popular family pets in the country. Unfortunately, this statistic means that they are the most likely to end up in the animal shelters as strays or unwanted pets. Perfectly healthy, sweet- tempered Labs are put to sleep everyday, sometimes without the benefit of a painless euthanasia drug, simply because there are not enough good homes for them.

We believe that there is a misconception that these Labs and Lab mixes have behavioral problems or extensive health issues that caused their owner's rejection. The truth is that the vast majority of these dogs find themselves suddenly abandoned by their owners and the only family and home they have ever known. This often happens because their owners lacked compassion or education about being a good, responsible pet owners. Sometimes these homeless pets are victims of unlucky circumstances or tragic events that caused them to become separated from loving families.

Please open your heart and your home to a Lab who needs your help. They will show you their appreciation with lots of tail wags, body wiggles and kisses. No matter the circumstances of their past, these homeless Labs are likely to bond completely and deeply with their new caretakers and make wonderfully affectionate and loyal companions for the rest of their lives.
