My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I am Apollo. I’m a male Harlequin Great Dane who will turn 3 yrs old very soon (born on December 3, 2012). I am spotted all over and have a few grey spots thrown in.

I have heterochromia—which means my eyes are two different colors—one eye is blue and the other is half blue and half brown.

I recently visited the doctor. I am healthy and am heart-worm negative. I am full grown, but I only weigh a hundred pounds. The doctor said I could gain a few pounds, so my foster mom has been trying to add a little food, but I am not too interested in eating more. I am also not really big on treats—I don’t like cheese! But I do like hot dogs!

I was surrendered to FFGDR by my family because my dad had a change of hours at work and he did not have time to care for me properly. He wanted me to have a home where someone would love me and have lots of time for me.

I am starving for attention. At my old home, I used to spend a lot of time being confined to the basement or my crate. I was so very lonely. Because of this, I really want a lot of attention. I need a lot of play time and petting. I am also pretty reluctant to go into a crate. My foster family has been working on gatting me to go in on command and I have been spending short amounts of time inside, so I am learning that someone is always coming back for me. My foster family is leaving me for two to four hours at a time and I seem to be managing. At night, I have been sleeping on a quilt on the bedroom floor near my people. I like that. They keep the room closed so that I don’t wander while they sleep.

Because I am starving for attention, I’m not focusing on being a well-mannered dog. I am going to need an owner who is willing to be my leader. I am looking forward to going to training because I really need to work on my manners. Right now, I have a lot of flaws, but they are all things that can easily be fixed by going to training classes and by getting lots of attention.

I seem to know some commands, like sit and stay, but I am pretty strong headed, so I only do them when I want to do them. In other words, I need a leader to help me learn to work on not to table/counter surf as well as stay off the furniture. Unless you don’t mind me on your furniture. I also like to steal things—socks and small items that seem like balls. I haven’t destroyed anything, I just want a little attention.

I like the other animals at my foster home. I have a Puggle brother and a cat. I am interested in both and would play if they would let me. I have not shown any aggression toward them. I have teenagers in my foster home and I love them and their friends. I have not been around little kids, but I do like older humans. I am big and full of energy, so I will probably not be very good with very old and very young people.

As I said, I am full of energy. I know how to fetch and I love to take walks. I do a good job on a leash and can walk long distances. My foster mom and I have walked 5K now several times. While I really like my foster family, my foster mom is afraid to drop my leash because she is not sure if I will wander. I am fast and strong and she is afraid she might lose me.

I am a beautiful, friendly, loving dog. I am going to be a good pet, but I need a little love, your attention and a good training class.
