Petey's Story...
These are before and after pictures of Petey. Quite a difference, huh? You might remember that last September, NorthStar rescued a young dog (we renamed Petey) from central South Dakota. It seemed that Petey’s drunken owner and his equally drunk neighbor had been fighting when the neighbor chose to take his anger/frustration out on Petey using a weed whip. Petey, who was underweight, matted, filthy and obviously badly injured, was taken to the local vet and treated. When the owner was unable to pay the fees at the vet clinic, he surrendered Petey. Once the physical wounds had healed enough, the vet reached out to NorthStar about taking Petey into rescue which we did immediately.

After a few months of boarding and training, Petey is now ready for a foster home. We are looking for a dog savvy foster who has experience with exuberant and strong willed dogs and will commit to continuing his training (which NorthStar will cover). A home with no children or older children may be better prepared to understand and accept his energy level and exuberance. He hasn’t really been around cats and will likely need slow introductions to other dogs. This boy is very eager to please and loves attention. He walks well on a leash but responds best when using a prong-style collar. Thanks to the trainers at Blaine Kennels, he knows heel, sit, down, place, stay, sit and wait before going through the door. He’s not perfect at those commands, but he’s getting there!

Any foster (or adopter) needs to understand that Petey is not perfect and will be a challenge. But he is most definitely worth it! Petey is now up to about 75 lbs. and is around 2 years old.

An adoption application, secure visible fencing, site visit and adoption fee are required to adopt Petey. With very few exceptions, a visible, securely fenced yard is required to adopt from NSGPR.

If you are interested in fostering or donating towards the cost of Petey’s care and rehabilitation, please contact Cheryl at mndogadvocate@gmail.com or Marnie at loven003@umn.edu.

Why Adoption is a Great Option

Petey, a Minneapolis Great Pyrenees dog was adopted! Here's how you can benefit by looking at adoption as an option to buying a Great Pyrenees for sale in Minneapolis, or seeking a Great Pyrenees dog from a breeder in Minneapolis.

  1. Rescues and shelter volunteers in Minneapolis already know the personality and tendencies of their pets. This means they can match you with the right pet. That will makes it much easier transition to owning a pet for yourself and your new pet.
  2. On average adoption fees are much less than you'd pay a Minneapolis breeder, or pet store. Plus most often rescue pets have already been to the veterinarian for a check-up, had a round of vaccinations, and are spayed or neutered. That is a lot of savings!
  3. You will become a hero, and give a needy dog or cat a loving home. In fact, there are even Great Pyrenees breeders who help with Great Pyrenees rescue. One puppy or kitten adopted in Minneapolis paves the way for another one to be saved.
