My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Pooka is a 5 year old, 105 lb purebred Alaska Malamute. Pooka is stunningly beautiful in a way photos are entirely unable to capture. Her good looks have literally stopped people in their tracks before, with one person leaning out of a moving car just to compliment her. Her fluffy coat is extremely soft and while she overheats easily in the summer months, this girl is the reigning snow queen in her county.

Pooka a overflowing with intelligence and love. She has picked up house training and basic commands and can now perform and obey a number of tricks. Pooka has good indoor manners. Her worst offense inside thus far has been licking a new household item or two to assess what said item is.

Pooka is still reeling from all the changes in her life in the past year, such as being surrendered by the man who has owned her since she was a baby and relocated to a foster home and adjusting to life as an indoor dog. Pooka just wants someone to love her, accept her for who she is, and reassure her that she’s safe and won’t ever be abandoned again.

Pooka is an extremely loyal and devoted dog and completely committed to her people. Once she trusts you and loves you, she bonds very tightly to her people. She is also loving, calm and polite with strangers, making her the most popular dog in her condo building.

Pooka will do best in a home with a securely fenced yard (ideally with dig guards), firm and consistent leadership, and people home more often than not. Pooka loves kids, but is a little too big and bouncy for them to be considered an ideal family pet. She would do fine with older, sturdy, teenaged children.

Pooka's biggest challenge is that she needs to be the only pet in her household. We have no issues with her need to get all the attention and we think all prospective adopters should agree. Pooka was attacked by another dog as a puppy and while she has lived with cats and other dogs in the past, it is unlikely that she would accept any other non-human creatures in to her pack at this point in her life.

Our main website, www.bigfluffydogs.com has more information about us and the rescue process. NOTE TO EMAILERS FROM ADOPT-A-PET: WE DO NOT RESPOND TO EMAIL INQUIRIES WITHOUT AN APPLICATION. WE REGRET WE CANNOT RESPOND TO EVERY EMAIL, BUT UNLESS YOU FILL OUT AN APPLICATION, WE DO NOT KNOW YOU EXIST. All known information about an individual dog is provided in it's listing. We do our best to provide accurate information, but adopters must understand that each home is different and the dog may behave differently in a new home. Dogs are creatures of their environment and you help make the dog what it will be. Homes considering adopting a puppy must be prepared for:1.) Flexible schedules for potty training. Puppies can only "hold it" for one hour per month of age (ex. a 4 month old puppy can only go 4 hours without a potty break).2.) Crate training until the puppy is at least one year old, to prevent chewing on inappropriate things when you can't supervise.3.) Socialization: The more positive and varying experiences as a puppy the better, both in and out of your home.4.) Puppy behavior and life stages are equivalent to a human toddler. It takes at least a full year to have a calmer, well adjusted dog. Patience is required and when your dog's behavior is a positive experience for you and those around you, your patience will be rewarded tenfold, for years to come. Please do not consider adopting a puppy if you have not thoroughly thought through the pros and cons of having one. So many people end up returning them after 3-5 months because they didn't realize the amount of work involved in raising a puppy.Patience, appropriate toys, socialization, and obedience training are all musts. All are time consuming, and can be expensive. All Dogs Require:Supervision with children and obedience training. Adopters that want to have good dogs must be prepared to put the time and effort into training a dog. Any dog requires work and effort, but a well trained, well socialized dog is more than worth the effort put in to get them there.
