My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

In addition to the following profile for this dog, please first read the Adoption Information at http://www.shihtzurescuemn.org/adopt.html to understand the process, requirements and timeline for adoption. An adoption application can also be found in the Adoption Info section. If, after reading that information, you have any questions, please submit your question via e-mail and it will be answered. Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you!

Lucy is a 6 month old Shih Tzu/Poodle mix. She has beautiful wavy black fur with a touch of white on her chin and chest. Lucy has a wonderful temperament, she is happy, playful and cuddly. At home, Lucy loves to play with her toys or cuddle next to you on the couch. She is a true companion dog, always wanting to be with her family. Because she is a puppy, Lucy needs more training to learn how to be a good doggy citizen. Her potty training is coming along very well, but she needs more time to be consistent with going potty outside. Lucy is very smart though, and loves to learn so she will be a fun dog to train!

Before you consider Lucy for adoption, you need to know her medical history. Lucy’s former family had her for only a short time when they noticed some severe neurological issues in her behavior. Lucy could hardly stand and appeared disoriented. Her family had some special tests done which confirmed that Lucy most likely had a liver shunt. In simple terms, a shunt is when blood does not go through the liver which cleanses the blood of toxins. Instead, some of the blood is shunted around or through the liver causing toxins to build up which then travel throughout the body and brain. Lucy’s family could just not afford further medical care for her, even though they already loved her dearly. So, they began a search for an organization that would take her and provide the medical care necessary. The family had almost given up when our rescue responded that we would take her! So, Lucy came to STRMN for the necessary tests and surgery to correct her shunt.

Lucy’s shunt was very difficult to locate. In fact, she had one surgery to try and correct the shunt, however the shunt was hidden and the surgeon was unable to locate it to resolve it. So, Lucy went on to the University of Minnesota for further tests. A special test, called a CT Angiogram was done and the shunt was finally located. Lucy had the surgery to correct her shunt on December 11th. After surgery, Lucy had to spend two days in intensive care at the U. Now she is home with her foster mom and recovering well from her surgery! We believe her shunt is closing and she will be able to lead a happy, healthy life!

Lucy is now available for adoption. Her foster mom would like to see her go to a home and family that will continue to monitor her health and diet. Lucy will need to eat a prescription food, L/d, until June when she can begin to eat regular dog food. Lucy will also need a bile acids test in June to verify that her liver is functioning well and her liver shunt has closed.

Lucy loves people of all ages and other small dogs! She does not like to be left alone for long hours, so her foster mom would like her to go a family that will spend time with her throughout the day AND cuddle with Lucy at night. If the family has another small dog, Lucy would love a canine companion! Older children to play with or sleep with at night would also be great for Lucy.

All of our dogs deserve special homes. Lucy just needs an extra special home because of her medical history. She is a great dog who will be a wonderful addition to a family who will give her lots of love and care for her life! We believe that because our rescue was able to provide Lucy with the surgery to correct her shunt, that she will now be able to live a long, happy life.

Lucy is spayed, current on vaccinations and is microchipped. Her adoption fee is $420.00 plus $30.56 sales tax for a total of $450.56. Her foster mom would like her to live in the immediate Twin Cities area so she can visit once in a while. She would also like Lucy and her new family to attend our Rescue Reunion which will be held September 10th this year . To ..meet Lucy, please complete an adoption application. Or you can also see her and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Minnetonka Petco near Ridgedale the last Saturday of every month.
