My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Let me introduce you to Bean. He is a 1 year old Chihuahua/Dachshund. He is a small lap dog but a bit bigger than a regular sized Chihuahua, he’s about 12lbs, and is a nice sized dog for any living situation. He has the Chihuahua tan colouring with a white belly and some patches of white on his paws and the tip of his curly tail. He has a cute snaggle tooth in his smile due to his cleft palate which gives him a unique but very adorable look. We have had his cleft palate examined and our vet has advised that it does not interfere with him in any way and he eats just fine. It makes him an individual and we think he’s super cute. Bean is a great dog with an even more wonderful temperament and personality.

Bean was rescued from a dog pound where his previous owners took him because they had some immediate family matters that needed attending and could no longer take care of him anymore. He seems to have come from a good home but we suspect he may have had some negative associations from a male in the home. Whenever he meets new people he is always very shy at first but after a while he warms up to them and becomes their best friend. However, whenever he sees a man he is very nervous of them and it takes him much longer to warm up to men than to women. He does warm up to men eventually and will be fine in a home with a man that understands his nervousness and will be patient and loving with him. Bean just wants to be loved and he will bond very strongly with anyone who is kind and caring with him. He seems to need a lot of care and loving but he returns it tenfold. Continued socialization with new people will help Bean to overcome his initial shyness. His foster family is doing a great job getting him out to meet new people and his adoptive family will need to continue this.

Bean would do well in pretty much any home situation. He is mostly calm and quiet indoors until he hears a knock or noise at the door. He will bark to let you know someone is at the door. He loves to greet people at the door by showing a lot of energy and enthusiasm when you first walk in. He would do well in an apartment setting, as well as a condo or house as he is the perfect size for any home. He enjoys all forms of exercise offered him, especially a chance to run off his energy by sprinting a few laps around you. He also does well with just regular walks and playing in the yard. But if it is pouring outside he can make do with quick trips out for potty breaks. Bean has been taken on walks about town and also on long walks in the wooded trails but he prefers short walks to long walks. He is still learning to walk on properly on a regular leash because he always wants to walk faster than you, so he prefers the extend-a-leash. Obedience school and continued training will help with his leash walking skills.

What Bean loves best though is snuggles and belly rubs. Bean is a huge CUDDLE BUG! He is happiest when he gets to cuddle on your lap, legs, stomach, or feet. He’s such a goofball because he finds the funniest positions to lay in and sticks his head somewhere like an ostrich with its head in the sand. He could sleep on you for hours while you read or watch TV and sometimes he has a cute little snore. He can't get enough love and affection. Not only does he have a sleepy, lazy side to him but he also has a very playful side to him. He likes to play fetch with a ball and will play tag with you. If you get him riled up he has energy to play for hours on end. He is the perfect combination of playful, energetic dog and calm, snuggly dog.

Bean has had a few accidents with us but he is getting better at telling us when he needs to go out by standing near the door wagging his tail. We just needed to figure out what he was telling us! He needs to go pee first thing in the morning and has a hard time waiting if you don’t take him out right away. He is crate trained and sleeps in his crate at night and stays in his crate when we are away from the house. He whines and barks for a bit when he knows we have left the house but whenever we come home he is quietly waiting in his crate. Listening to music or the TV seems to calm him down a bit when we’re gone. He really doesn’t like to be left alone but he seems to be getting more used to it. He will need to continue to be crated as he is a young dog still and could get up to mischief if left loose in the home unattended.

Bean is good with dogs and cats. His foster home does not have any other pets but he has visited other homes with pets. He is shy when first meeting another pet but after a while he warms up to them and starts playing with them. We think he would do well in a home with other dogs or cats because he would have a play companion and be less lonely when left alone. Bean would do just as well being the only dog and getting all the attention to himself. Bean is not being fostered in a home with children but when we brought him to visit a house with children, ages 4-10, he had the time of his life playing with them. With his playful, energetic personality we believe he would do really well in a home with children over the age of 8 yrs because he would get lots of attention and playtime. If there are children in the home they would need to be children that have been taught proper behaviour around a dog. Bean is too little for rough housing and wont suit a home with rambunctious children.

Bean is just beginning to be taught basic obedience in his foster home. He does not know any tricks yet but that is a work in progress. Bean is a dog that likes to jump up on people he’s excited to see but does not jump onto strangers. We are working on this and he will need continued training to get him to learn to keep all 4 feet on the floor when he greets people. It doesn’t appear that Bean had much training in his previous home so we have been starting from scratch with him. His new family should commit to continuing his obedience training to bring out the best in him. We are looking for a family for him that understands that just because he is little, this does not mean that he shouldn’t be properly trained or have rules and expectations. Bean will be a happier and more fulfilled dog with rules and direction. We are looking for a family that will take Bean to obedience school so that he can learn to be a well behaved dog and he will benefit from the socialization that dog classes bring. Bean needs to get out and experience the world and meet a bunch of people and other animals and obedience school is a great place to do this.

As a final note, we are happy to say that Bean had tested negative for heartworm when we had him tested. He is a very healthy, young dog with no apparent health problems. He was recently neutered and recovered very quickly. He is looking for a forever home to share his love. Could this be yours?

All Pound Dog Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested, de-wormed (if required), and micro-chipped prior to adoption.
