My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I have an Adoption Pending, but hope you will consider one of our other great dogs. Thank you!

WARNING!
READ NO FURTHER UNLESS YOU ARE PREPARED TO HAVE YOUR HEART STOLEN!

Sweet little Whisper came into a shelter in Louisiana as a super shy stray just before Christmas. One of our volunteers found her posted on a website and asked us if we could take in this sweet baby doll. Our hearts melted when we saw her photos! Whisper’s advocate at the shelter told us, “She's come so far during her stray hold and now approaches volunteers for pets and treats and wags her tail. Even when she was petrified after first coming in, she showed no aggression. She’s just the sweetest little thing you could imagine!” At about 9 months-old, we aren't quite sure what this enchanting gal is mixed with - but we can attest that it's all sugar and spice and everything nice! Take a look at her video to see for yourself.

Whisper loves every human she has met. Her tails wags non-stop and she loves cuddling up. She is good with other dogs but Whisper’s best friend is Rumi, a Golden Retriever in her foster home. She follows him around in adoration and bestows kisses upon him whenever she can! SOOOO SWEEEEET! This black beauty will flourish in the care of a loving adopter who will embrace her as their new BFF.

Whisper has been brought up-to-date on vaccinations, was spayed and is microchipped. Sadly, she is the youngest dog that we can recall in our care who has tested positive for heartworms. While she is under heartworm treatment, Whisper will be staying with a loving foster mom in the south who will shower her with affection and get her healthy and ready for her forever family. She will be ready to go to her forever home in late February. If your specialty is TLC and you are home most of the day, do not wait to contact us about Whisper. A dog like this will not last!

If you are approved to adopt through SGRR and you are home most of the day, contact Donna to be considered to adopt Whisper. If not yet approved, please fill out an application for consideration.

Since the early 2000’s, animal rescue workers have noticed an increasing phenomena called “Black Dog Syndrome,” which is that black dogs tend to be adopted slower than dogs of other coloring. As a result, there are more black dogs in shelters, and black dogs have a higher euthanization rate – purely because of the color of their coat! In a recent survey done by the adoption website “Petfinder,” Petfinder member shelters and rescue groups reported that most pets are listed for 12.5 weeks on Petfinder, whereas, less-adoptable pets (such as black, senior, and special needs pets) spend almost four times as long on Petfinder.

You may ask, "what does this have to do with a Golden Retriever rescue?" SGRR often goes a step further than basic rescue, taking in dogs that might be thought of as “less adoptable” because of the physical conditions in which they are found. We have recently been taking in more and more of these special black dogs, many times considered to be golden mixes, into our rescue. We see an overwhelming interest in these “black goldens,” getting requests about them the minute we publish their picture on our site! Like all of our dogs, these pups are just looking for a family to look past their coloring and see their true “golden heartedness,” to love them and make them their own! You’ll be glad that you did.

If you have already been approved for adoption through SGRR, please contact Donna to be considered to adopt Whisper.

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

SGRR Adoption Fees (subject to change)**
Puppies under 6 months $650
Young dogs 6 months - 6 years $550
Young dogs - Special Needs $450
Senior dogs 7 - 9 years $450
Seniors dogs 10 years and older $350
Senior dogs - Special Needs $300
Young Bonded Pairs $850
Senior Bonded Pairs $750

**Please note: The fees listed represent a slight increase and are effective for applications received after June 1 2014. We regret the need to increase the fees for our dogs, but found it necessary due to the increased costs we are faced with for each dog's care and placement.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.

Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
