My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

If Riggs had a motto, it might be, "What a difference a day makes," or "What you see is not what you get!" Midwest BREW came to his rescue and pulled this terrified little boy out of a south central Ohio shelter. When the shelter staff took him out of his cage, he wet on the floor. When he walked, it was with a crouched gait, but most of the time he just laid down in fear, avoiding eye contact. In foster care, he spent 6 days in his crate, unwilling to venture out on his own. But on the 7th day, everything changed.
On that morning, Riggs came out of his crate, stretched, and walked tall to the back door. For the first time, he pottied off-lead, explored the yard, climbed the steps, and snuggled in the dog bed beside his crate. Later, he played with some of his toys and spent quality time with a nylabone. He held my gaze and cocked his head when I spoke to him. By nightfall, he was in my lap resting his head on my knee. In short, Riggs had turned a corner.
The new man Riggs is a young, active, happy-go-lucky male of high-medium energy, who is looking for a family to have fun with. Deep chested, lean, and athletic, this little 26-lb. boy is made for action. He runs laps around the yard quick as greased lightening, so a fenced yard is a requirement for him. He can toss a toy 6 feet in the air, bat tennis balls with his feet like a soccer player, chase his tail in a whirling dervish, roll in the grass and--once--even managed to stand on his head (well, almost!)! Silly, playful, and full of joy, Riggsy is making up for lost time.
For all the confidence and humor Riggs shows in his home and yard, it does not currently extend past the property line. The big wide world is still cause for fear, so new things, like leashed walks, car rides, and exploring new places, need to be introduced slowly. Given the progress Riggs has already made, it is fully expected that one day this consummate homebody will relish his walks in the neighborhood, and be stimulated by all the sights, sounds, and smells that our Beagles love.
Riggs is calm and quiet in the house, respects what's yours, and is reliably house-trained (and is uncrated at night). He's very smart, and well on his way to learning basic commands--sit, come, stay, off. He's very good with the resident dog, and would do well with a confident, well-adjusted dog who could help him overcome any lingering fears. He warms up to visitors quite quickly, and would likely do well with older children who understood him.
Riggs is a very sweet dog with a gentle soul who responds to love, kindness, and affection. Patience and understanding are the keys to unlocking the confident dog inside--the one that wants to love and trust, and run and play. If you are looking for a dog to have fun with, but one who needs a little help from you to be all he can be, then Riggs is your man!
