Rupert is a Miniature Pinscher, male, 7 years of age. Rescued from Monroe County Animal Control, Rupert currently lives in a Monroe SPCA foster home with other dogs and cats. A healthy dog now, he has been treated for a systemic fungal infection of the skin and bilateral ear infections.
Small without being fragile, lively and sometimes bold, having completely endearing breed traits like intense devotion, animated expression, and feisty, terrier-like attitude (okay, mostly endearing), Rupert is also elegant, proud, adventurous, and courageous; and he’s looking for a responsible, caring, and confident owner who understands and practices pack leadership and will not let him develop “Small Dog Syndrome” or get away with things that a large dog wouldn’t be allowed to get away with.
Active, agile, sometimes playful, and always interested, Rupert’s exercise needs are modest and can be met with daily walks on a leash (which he loves) and romps in the backyard for exploration and interactive play. Because of his small size, adventure-seeking nature, and inclination toward protecting his beloved family (which can get him into trouble), Rupert must always be in a safely secured yard or area and/or on a leash when outdoors, and he should always be accompanied by an adult family member – under no circumstances should he ever be left unattended outdoors for any period of time.
Once an uncertain, unhealthy, and frustrated dog with few social skills – one of a number of animal victims in a cruelty case; Rupert is now a confident, happy, extremely social and well-mannered, young-at-heart senior canine who responds well to positive, upbeat direction and training with treats and praise as motivation. Attentive and very obedient when he knows what is expected of him, much of Rupert’s success lies in not only his knowing the rules and boundaries, but also knowing they’ll be consistently adhered to.
Fawningly devoted and extremely affectionate with people he knows and trusts, he can be reserved, even aloof, with strangers and if allowed to become a pack leader himself and/or not kept socialized, he’ll veer of course, once again, exerting anxious independence and becoming undeniably suspicious of people outside of his family. Adorable, adoring, and always entirely sincere, this handsome, very well-adjusted Min Pin loves to be the center of attention, he thrives on human companionship and close contact, and he will always want to be included in family activities – anything less and he’ll simply languish.
Sweet-natured, loyal, upbeat, funny, quick to please, mildly quirky, and highly sensitive, Rupert’s family members will need to be consistently firm, but never harsh, on the household rules to ensure that he stays happy and keeps his good canine manners. Although considered a toy (make that the King of Toys, no less), it would be a mistake to underestimate this spunky little Min Pin boy’s abilities - he’s highly intelligent with a larger-than-life personality and he loves learning new things. Although he isn’t going to turn down many treats, Rupert revels in praise for accomplishment, and he’ll enjoy and excel in obedience training and just about anything else he does.
Rupert is best-suited for a home with a calm, laid-back lifestyle and no toddler-aged children. Like many dogs, particularly those of the toy breeds, he has the potential to become snappy, timid, or even depressed if not protected from active or unruly children or any forms of harsh or disrespectful treatment. Rupert gets along very well with the canines and felines he currently lives in a foster home with, but a meet-n-greet with any housemate pets will be necessary prior to adoption. Rupert is also crate-trained, housebroken, and extremely well-mannered when riding along with “his people” in vehicles (which he loves to do).
You can meet Rupert at Monroe SPCA adoption events and by pre-arrangement with approved Adoption Application. All Monroe SPCA dogs available for adoption and in foster homes have an adoption fee of $200.00. This fee includes the dog being spayed or neutered, HW negative, up-to-date on age appropriate vaccinations, and micro-chipped prior to adoption.

Completed adoption applications can be emailed to info@monroespca.org or dropped off at Monroe SPCA’s Adoption Center and Resale Store (previously Gator’s Pet Supplies located at 293 W. Monroe St, Dundee, MI 48131). You can also return your completed applications to Monroe County Animal Control (next to the fairgrounds) during business hours.
