My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

GRFR would like to introduce you to Porter, a gentle and beautiful, 8-9 year old, female Golden Retriever. Porter is up to date on vaccinations, has had x-rays and blood work done, and has been given a clean bill of health. No joint issues, no lumps or bumps and great teeth, too. She weighs around 90 pounds so has some weight to lose, which, with some regular structure of food and exercise, should be no problem.

Who knows what her past was like, but it will take a while for her "golden" to come out. She prefers to be by herself and needs a safe place to take it all in, but when you do sit with her or encourage her to come out and hang with the family, she does seem to like the contact and touch, so does not mind human contact. She does get startled at sudden moves and noises, and is very unsure of the world, so a calmer and patient approach is needed. Though house trained, she does not like to go out for walks and is not used to a leash, but with some coaxing, will comply, and with repetition, is starting to show signs of stopping to sniff on walks, and relax, but has a long way to go. Like a typical golden, she doesn't have a 'mean' bone in her body, and is so gentle, docile and beautiful.

Porter doesn't seem to bond/show any interest in other dogs. She has a foster sibling that could be her twin sister and she has shown no interest or connection with her. She is very 'numb' to her environment at times, likely her way of just 'coping'. An experienced adopter, perhaps one with experience with breeder releases, would be ideal to help Porter on her journey. A quieter and slower moving home would be ideal, so she can take it all slowly and not be too stimulated. She would probably do best as the only dog with someone home most of the time, so that she can get used to the companionship and bond. A carpeted home would be better than hardwood, as her back legs do slip as she moves around on hardwood - or a home that's willing to put down runners for her. She is fine with carpeted stairs. She is coaxed to come up and sleep in her foster parents' room each night. She does stay the night upstairs; when she does have a choice to leave, she chooses to stay, vs. getting away from us at first opportunity.

If you are looking for a sweet girl that will be no trouble, will likely not ask to play or be walked or make a peep, and will welcome a long massage or pet and a quiet/slow walk, Porter would love to meet you. She deserves so much love and patience...and has many good years left in her to realize how life as a dog can be enjoyable and she doesn't have to withdraw and be alone.
