This stunning beauty is Freckles!  Freckles appears to be a Pointer/Great Pyrenees mix (her mom was a Shepherd mix).  Freckles came into the shelter as a puppy seven years ago, and is still waiting for her family to find her.  For whatever reasons, she has been overlooked, but what a gem she is!  Though she has not been in a long term foster home, she has spent several long weekends and nights in foster care recently and has done great.  She appears to be house trained, calmly interested in new situations and visitors, very responsive to guidance and training, and good with older children.  Inside the shelter,  Freckles displayed pretty severe storm anxiety but she has pleasantly surprised us by showing no symptoms of storm anxiety while in foster care -  she couldn't care less about thunder or lightening while in a home.  Freckles has had fun in foster care with other, smaller dogs, and has natural maternal instincts with puppies (a puppy's toe got stepped on and he squealed and Freckles rushed over and started licking his face to comfort him!).   At the shelter, Freckles has been spending quite a bit of time in the shelter cat room and done well, so we think she would also live very nicely with dog savy cats.
Because she does not have much experience with life outside of the shelter, Freckles will need a family who will be patient with her and take things slowly.   She may need house training reinforcement, though she has not had a single accident while in her foster home.  She is crate trained and walks well on a leash - she loves a brisk walk!  She also loves to play and romp but isn't demanding of large amounts or long active events.  Freckles has shown mild resource guarding of food from other dogs.  This can be managed by feeding her separately and she listens to correction well, so there is room for improvement.   A securely fenced yard is recommended (6-ft. wooden) for Freckles if she is to be outside off leash, as she can climb a fence and also knows how to open a front door!  Given her history with storm anxiety and proneness to escape a yard when unattended, we think that Freckles might start to display mild separation anxiety in her new home.  Someone who is home more than not would likely be the best fit for this sweet girl - once she finally connects with her person, she is going to want to spend as much time with you as possible!
Freckles loves toys and LOVES water! She would definitely be an ideal beach buddy! She will play fetch, but doesn't always bring the object back. She's affectionate, eager to please, smart and even-tempered. An obedience class is strongly recommended, not just for the bonding aspect of it, but it helps with confidence building and socialization.
Freckles has been waiting a long time for the right home to find her.  Could that be you?
Freckles Backstory:   Freckles' mom was very pregnant when she was rescued after years of trying to catch her and then gave birth to Freckles and her litter mates two weeks later on Christmas Day. What more beautiful gift on Christmas than life!

**Additional info you should know -  For most of our dogs, we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix.  We get to know each of our dogs as an individual and do our best to describe and place them based on personality not breed label.   Some dogs may not yet be in New England, nor ready for immediate adoption.  There may be additional vetting, quarantine, waiting periods and/or fees depending upon your state of residence. If you have questions or concerns on any of this, you can discuss this with your Adoption Counselor.

Our Adoption Process...

Step 1: Find Fido

Review our online dog bios, email us if you have any questions. At SOS, we want to make the RIGHT right match, and that means helping you and Fido start a relationship – sometimes from a long distance.

Take your time, explore your options, consider your home and what kind of companion will fit in your lifestyle.

Step 2: Complete Our Application

Once you think you have found the right dog for you, please complete our online application.

At SOS, we don’t just want to make a match, we want to make the right match. To do this, we need your help; we know our dogs, but we don’t know you yet – our application helps us get to know you!

Step 3: Have a Talk

We will review the application and if it appears to be a good match for the selected dog, we will arrange for a time to talk with you over the phone.

Step 4: Meet Your Match

If, after the phone interview, the match seems to be a good one, we will be happy to arrange a meet-n-greet with you and the dog, if the dog is local. Meet-n-greets will be scheduled in the order they are requested.

Step 5: Application Screening

Once everyone has met (if the dog is local), and the match seems to be a good one, a designated SOS volunteer will check your landlord, vet, and personal references, as relevant. We may also require a home visit or adopter meeting.

Step 6: Finalize The Adoption

If the match is a good one, you will be informed via email of the adoption decision, and provided with instructions for how to pay the adoption donation and complete our adoption contract/addendum(s).

Step 7: Pick Up Your New Best Friend!

Once the adoption is finalized, congratulations! We will contact you to make arrangements to pick up your new family member!
**Please note that additional vetting, quarantine and/or waiting periods may be required depending upon your state of residence.
