4/27/15: Sprite got scared and climbed out of fenced area and is missing! If you see her she won't let you get close, but please contact someone with STAR.

Bio: RESCUE ONLY / NEEDS REHABBER TO WORK ON SOCIALIZATION Sponsored for rescue! Update 12/8/13: Sprite is fine with other dogs. No way of knowing about cats, no cats here to test her with. She is not good with people. She avoids them at all cost. If you pick her up she is inclined to bite, so will need to go to a rehabber to work on her socialization. She is a very sweet and pitiful dog. She needs to be in special hands and worked with as it appears she was not socialized with people growing up. 11/12 update: Currently in the kennel due to foster family having to stop fostering for awhile. Sprite is very shy doesn't want to be in the kennel, comes into eat and drink, then sleeps out in the cold. Had snow on her this morning. She was kenneled with Ashton for the few hours he was here, and had not issues. I may actually put her with another dog, as she did attempt to come in when Ashton arrived. Original Bio: Shy, needs socialization. She’s getting closer to foster parents every day and has begun using doggie door to basement. Plays with their poodle and cocker. Origin: (PR) ROWAN COUNTY
10/1/14 update: Sprite has been doing better in foster home the last few months. Loves the other animals she is living with and still a little shy about being caught but seems to enjoy being petted on now. She is getting updated vaccinations 10/7/14 and still hoping for a home of his own! This was STARs former leader's last foster, so Sprite has extra special meaning...
Please note: In most cases, the breed mix is our best guess based on the size/appearance of the dog. Most of the dogs we get are strays so their history is unknown.
Dogs in the shelter receive their first DAPPv vaccination (parvo/distemper) upon arrival at the pound. Rabies vaccine and spay/neuter surgery are mandatory and done for the adoption fee for local residents. Please note rabies vaccine and surgeries are NOT done on site and the adoption fee must be paid before they receive rabies vaccine or surgery.
For cats marked (PC) please call the shelter at 606-784-4930 or go there directly to adopt...and do it quickly. Time is of the essence for the cats at the shelter. Due to crowding, some may only have a few days. Cat adoption fee at the shelter is $50 which includes spay/neuter.

About STAR - Saving the Animals of Rowan

About Our Rescue Group...

Saving the Animals of Rowan is a 501c3 organization committed to improving the conditions for the abandoned dogs of Rowan County, KY. Our few members work to find safe and loving homes or rescues for dogs that find themselves in the Tri-County Animal Shelter. STAR members are dedicated to reducing the number of dogs euthanized due to the overcrowded conditions of this rural shelter.

STAR is not the dog pound. We are a small group of caring people who save shelter dogs. Our goal is to get dogs out of the pound and to the safety of a rescue or a new home. We can only help dogs outside the pound when space and funds are available. If you are local you can either give STAR a few weeks to work on placement for your dog or you can take your dog to the shelter and we will assess it there. We work solely on donations and are always in need of more local foster homes in the Rowan County KY area.

Come Meet Our Pets...

Meetings with STAR dogs are by appointment, after an application has been screened/approved.

Our Adoption Process...

Application, vet reference check, home visit, meet-n-greet with the dog and all of your family members (2-legged and 4-legged) to see if it's a good fit. STAR will ALWAYS take back any dog if the adoption doesn't work out for any reason. All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, heartworm tested (treated if positive), dewormed, treated for fleas/ticks/mange as needed, and vaccinated with the first distemper combo and rabies vaccines.
