ALL THINGS RUSSELL

RUSSELL IS ONE OF THOSE DOGS WHO WILL NEED AN UNDERSTANDING/EXPERIENCED ADOPTER. RUSSELL’S PREVIOUS OWNER COULDN’T KEEP HIM AND TURNED HIM IN TO THE POUND. RUSSELL WAS OVERWHELMED BY ALL THE NOISE AND ACTIVITY AT THE POUND. HIS HUMANS WERE GONE, FEAR TOOK HOLD AND HE WITHDREW INTO A QUIET PLACE. NO ONE NOTICED THIS HANDSOME GUY WHO JUST STAYED CURLED UP AND WOULDN’T INTERACT IF PEOPLE STOPPED BY HIS PEN. ALSO, HIS FACE IS SALT AND PEPPER, WHICH MAKES HIM LOOK OLDER THAN HIS ACTUAL 4 YEARS. THANKFULLY, A FOR LIAISON NOTICED HIM OVER THERE ALL ALONE. HE RESPONDED TO HER KINDNESS AND ALWAYS SHOWED MANNERS WHEN SHE INTERACTED WITH HIM. HE’D BEEN THERE A LONG TIME, AND THAT’S NOT GOOD FOR ANY DOG. SHE SUGGESTED HIM TO FOR AND THANKFULLY PEOPLE STEPPED UP TO FOSTER RUSSELL AND GIVE HIM A SECOND CHANCE AT THE LIFE HE DESERVES.

ONCE OUT OF THE SHELTER, IT BECAME APPARENT THAT RUSSELL DOES HAVE A FEW ISSUES. THEY ARE ALL MANAGABLE, BUT POTENTIAL ADOPTERS NEED TO BE AWARE OF THEM. SO, HERE THEY ARE: 1. RUSSELL DOES NOT LIKE DOGS BIGGER THAN HIM. THEY INTIMIDATE HIM AND HE ACTS AGGRESSIVELY TOWARD THEM. 2. RUSSELL ISN’T COMFORTABLE WITH SMALL CHILDREN. THEIR SUDDEN MOVEMENTS AND SPONTANIOUS DISPLAYS OF AFFECTION STARTLE HIM AND HE MAY GROWL AT THEM. 3. IN A NEW ENVIRONMENT, RUSSELL WILL NEED TIME TO DECOMPRESS UNTIL HE BEGINS TO FEEL SECURE IN HIS SURROUNDINGS. DON’T RUSH TO GIVE HIM LOTS OF ATTENTION OR AFFECTION. FEED HIM; TAKE HIM FOR WALKS OR OUT INTO THE YARD, BUT WAIT FOR HIM TO COME TO YOU WHEN HE’S READY. ALSO, INTRODUCE HIM TO ANY COMPANY GRADUALLY OR HE WILL GO INTO HIS DEFENSIVE/PROTECTIVE MODE (I’D RECOMMEND PUTTING HIM IN HIS CRATE IF YOU’RE EXPECTING COMPANY – AT LEAST UNTIL HE’S HAD TIME TO FEEL SECURE IN YOUR HOME. 4. HE CAN BE A BIT POSSESSIVE OF THE COUCH AND HIS FOOD BOWL. HE WANTS TO BE THE ONLY FUR BUDDY WITH COUCH PRIVILEDGES AND HIS FOOD IS “HIS” FOOD! IF YOU DON’T HAVE OTHER PETS, IT SHOULDN’T BE A PROBLEM.

NOW FOR THE WONDERFUL THINGS ABOUT RUSSELL! HE IS A GREAT DOG AND IS VERY SMART. HE LOVES TO PLAY WITH DOG PUZZLES. HE’S GREAT ON WALKS AND CAR RIDES. HIS FIRST FOSTER MOM TOOK HIM ON WALKS ON THE MOUNTAIN, THEN THEY’D GO TO STARBUCKS, WHERE SHE INTRODUCED HIM TO PUPPACINOS – AND HE LOVES THEM! BEST OF ALL, ONCE HE SETTLES IN, HE LOVES HIS HUMAN COMPANIONS AND WANTS TO PLEASE AND BE CLOSE TO THEM. HE’S FUN AND PLAYFUL WITHOUT BEING HYPER. RUSSELL HAS BEEN AROUND CATS. HE’S OK WITH THEM, BUT MAY GIVE CHASE IF THEY RUN THROUGH AND CATCH HIS ATTENTION. HE’S FOSTERED WITH 3 CATS AND HAS NOT HURT ANY OF THEM.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN RUSSELL, IT WOULD BE BEST TO DO A FEW VISITS AND WALKS WITH HIM, AND EVEN HAVE A TRIAL WEEKEND BEFORE GOING FORWARD WITH AN ADOPTION.

RUSSELL IS CURRENT ON ALL HIS SHOTS, HE’S NEUTERED, ON HEARTWORM PREVENTION AND HAS BEEN MICRO-CHIPPED. HE IS A NICE, STURDY BOY OF 30 LBS. LOOKING AT HIM, WE THINK HE’S A MIX OF BEAGLE, JACK RUSSELL, AND MAYBE SOME BASSETT OR CORGI. HE IS HOUSE AND CRATE TRAINED, GETS ALONG WELL WITH SMALLER DOGS. HE WILL SLEEP ALL NIGHT IN A CRATE WITHOUT COMPLAINT. HE’LL DO FINE ON A DOGGIE BED AS WELL, OR EVEN TO SLEEP WITH YOU IF THAT’S OK. RUSSELL WILL MAKE A GREAT COMPANION FOR A SINGLE ADULT OR A COUPLE, OR A FAMILY WITHOUT SMALL CHILDREN. HE JUST NEEDS THE TIME AND BREATHING ROOM TO ADJUST TO HIS NEW ENVIRONMENT, AND HE’S WELL WORTH THE EFFORT.
HAVING REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS AND A COMMON SENSE APPROACH WILL GO A LONG WAY IN HELPING RUSSELL HAVE A SUCCESSFUL TRANSISTION INTO YOUR HOME AND LIFE.

About Friends of Rescue - Homewood

About Our Rescue Group...

Friends of Rescue is a certified 501(c)(3) organization formed in 2009, consisting of volunteers who are devoted to saving shelter animals that are in danger of euthanasia. Southern shelters have a constant overflow of dogs and cats, little funding, and limited space. Once the animals arrive at the shelter, they have very little time. It is our goal to help save these adoptable animals and find loving individuals/families who will provide committed, FORever homes. We are NOT professional trainers or animal behaviorists; simply volunteers who are trying to save these animals from euthanasia. Each animal in our program is in a foster home and receives all age-appropriate vetting while in our care.

Our Adoption Process...

We have many wonderful dogs and cats looking for FORever Homes!

Our adoption fee covers their complete age-appropriate vetting, spay/neuter, microchip, heartworm/flea prevention, and full medical records.

Go to www.FORrescue.net and click on "Adoption" and then "Applications" to apply for the animal you are interested in adopting.

Please email us at info@FORrescue.net with any questions you might have about FOR or our adoption process.
