Lou Ellen is a beautiful 5 year old tri-color Llewellyn Setter that is retired from a hunting ranch. She was retired early because someone abused her with a shock collar. She has no interest in hunting any longer and she startles at loud noises. She is not a candidate for a home that is interested in hunting. She is also not a candidate for invisible fences and should never have to wear any type of shock collar.
Lou Ellen, also known as Lu Lu or Lula Belle by her foster mom, prefers a calm quieter home with someone that is home a lot. She will require a Setter experienced home that can offer firm, but gentle guidance. The ideal home for Lu Lu is one that offers patience for her to settle in and where she knows what to expect from day to day. Because she prefers a more calm home we feel that rules out homes with children.
She warms up to other dogs if given some time for introductions and to get to know the other dogs in a controlled situation. She does enjoy having the company of other dogs, and is not an ‘alpha dog’. LuLu is probably happiest being middle to low in a pack structure. She thinks cats are great fun to hunt, so we are not recommending her for a home with cats.
Lu Lu loves her crate (it is her “safe spot”) and when things get too hectic in her foster home she can be found relaxing in her crate by choice, away from the activity. Lu Lu has good manners, loves car rides, and she always greets her foster mom with hugs and kisses upon returning home.
Lu Lu is fine in 5 foot fencing and would like at least a medium size yard with a physical fence to do her setter self-exercising thing daily. She is a candidate for an only dog home. When she wants to come in the house she sits politely waiting to be let in. She does jump up and down when she sees you at the back door but she doesn’t scratch on the door. Lu Lu’s activity level is medium-to-low on the Setter scale.
She clearly appreciates the good life she now has in rescue. After spending time in the yard, Lula Belle is very content relaxing in the house and her crate. She is highly treat-motivated and that translates to ease in training. She is quite a lady in taking treats gently from your hand. She would like to guard her crate from the other dogs in the home, but foster Mom gives a gentle verbal correction and that is the end of it.
Lulu exhibited some behavior that put her in danger when she was with her former adopters. When she settled into their home, she started to protect the home and family from strangers. Her new family needs to provide leadership and let Lulu know she doesn’t need to do this and for safety reasons she should be kept separated from strangers coming and going in the home. Lulu's foster mom has been helping her with several issues, including learning to trust again because of the way she has been handled in her past. We believe that this beautiful, loving girl is now ready to move into her perfect "fur-ever home" with patient adopters who will provide her the time to fully develop a trusting relationship, while giving her firm guidelines and taking appropriate actions to keep her safe.
Lu Lu eats well and should be kept on a high quality grain free food. She is spayed and up to date on vaccinations and heartworm preventative. She will make a wonderful addition to a calm and loving family.  Lulu is in foster care near Waco, TX and is available to adopt now.
