About New Mexico Pets Alive!
About Our Rescue Group...
New Mexico Pets Alive! (NMPA!) is a registered 501-c-3 non-profit organization in the State of NM. Our mission is to help reduce the influx of lost and homeless pets arriving in New Mexico shelters while simultaneously helping to increase the health and live release rates of those companion animals ending up in our animal control and shelter systems. We wish our state of New Mexico to achieve the companion animal welfare success of many communities across America, now saving 90% - 99% of their lost and homeless pets.
NMPA! seeks out the most successful companion animal life-saving programming being implemented across the United States and we then promote and work to deliver that programming here within our state of New Mexico for the benefit of our people and our pets.
Inspired by the past 15+ years of success of our neighboring states achieving No-Kill communities (saving all healthy and treatable companion animals entering animal control and private and municipal shelters - 90% to 98% of intake), we are embarking upon one the largest companion animal life-saving efforts in New Mexico's history. With the help of some of the most successful veterinarians, trainers, rescue group and shelter leaders across North America, we are developing and delivering informational and programmatic resources to help New Mexico achieve this same level of success.
We need your help to deliver this information and programming in New Mexico for the benefit of New Mexico's companion animals, pet guardians and our communities as a whole. We need your help to make the largest positive impact. You can volunteer, foster a pet, donate or become one of our future staff members to help us achieve success as quickly as possible.
Today, we are fortunate to now have more than 500 cities and towns, all economically, socially and culturally diverse, across the United States who have achieved No-Kill success, with many more communities on the verge of doing the same. There is nothing easy about what we are embarking upon but inspired by the work of the No-Kill communities across the US, we are extremely grateful to be able to help duplicate the success of others rather than re-invent the wheel. Join us in helping to bring about needed positive changes for our people and our pets in New Mexico.

Our Adoption Process...
Our Adoption Process:
New Mexico Pets Alive currently completes adoptions via 'foster to adopt'. The process includes an adoption form, home visit and meet and greet and 1 week foster period if our adoption team thinks the match could be a great one for everyone involved. The foster period allows everyone to see if the pup/dog/cat may be the right fit for their family before we finalize the adoption. That removes pressure on potential adopters and allows us to be able to facilitate good matches with very few adoption returns. If it's not the right fit, we would prefer to learn that prior to adoption finalization so we can better help both our adoptables and potential adopters find the match that will be the right fit. We do our best to rotate our pups and dogs in a variety of foster homes to expand their world view, social skills, confidence, new experiences and in some cases their coping skills. We do not prefer to keep a pup or dog in the same foster home for a long period of time unless it is the home that will be adopting them. Our ability to meet maximum rotation depends on how many active foster families we have at any given time.
Availability of Our Adoptables:
Many families looking to adopt take the time to complete our adoption form and home visit even if we do not currently have a pet they wish to adopt. While they actively search local shelters and other adoption groups for their adoption match, they will receive 1st photos of our incoming rescues before we upload the photos to our adoption site because they have taken the time to complete these steps already. When they receive photos and see a pup, kitten, dog or cat they would like to meet and possibly adopt, they then have 1st adoption priority. Most of our adoptions happen via this method so most of our pets available for adoption never make it onto our adoption website and some don't even make it to the Canine Cafe dog adoption center.
The NMPA foster to adopt form is located online at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s /VDTLL53. You may complete the online form to get the process started. Once we receive it, our team will review your application and get back to you to set up a home visit. It allows us to meet everyone in the family, see where the NMPA adoptables will be living, answer any questions you may have, etc. Once the home visit is completed, our adoption team will begin sending you photos of our incoming rescues and do their best to help you find an adoption match. They will also recommend other adoption agencies, groups and orgs as well.
If a pet is listed on our adoption site, it does not necessarily mean they are available for adoption. We do not remove an adoption listing until the adoption is finalized which can take a week or more.
