My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Let me introduce you to Jester, an approximately 18 month old male short haired Border Collie. Jester is a very sweet, loyal boy with a gentle personality and unique look. He is 56lbs and is the perfect size to do most activities with. He is also exceptionally smart and has limitless potential for learning. He is active, but not crazy active, and he is portable, fit, athletic, and oh so good looking. He is looking for a forever home that is wanting a Border Collie, is familiar with the breed, and has the time to spend with him doing activities, training, tricks, dog sports, long walks, hikes….anything to keep his brain and body active.

Jester was surrendered to a shelter as his previous owners were moving and didn’t want to take him along. He was very upset over this abandonment and was terrified in the shelter situation making his adoption potential minimal. We were asked to take in Jester so that he could settle into a foster home and his loving personality could shine through. Jester deserves a family who is as devoted to him as he will be to them. He needs to belong in a home where he can be confident in that fact that he has found his forever family and will never be lost or abandoned again. Jester would do well in an active home as he loves to go for walks and run and play. He is a working breed so he needs daily exercise. He is great in the car and will make a wonderful travel companion. He is a dog that will be a wonderful family member and will accompany you on anything you wish to do with him.

Jester loves to go for walks or just get out in the back yard to play. Jester would make a great Frisbee, agility, biking or running companion. Jester will need a house with a fenced back yard to run around in and would not do well in an apartment as he is quick to sound the alarm when someone comes to the door or the neighbours come home. Jester is shy and is a very sensitive boy. If you have to correct him for anything his feelings get hurt so easily, so a little correction goes a long way. We use a verbal correction with Jester and he is very responsive to that. He is very in tune with his people and learns quickly the rules of the home, and what you expect from him. He can be fearful of some men, although he has 2 men in his foster family that he is quite fond of and cuddles with regularly. In fact his foster dad is extremely attached to him and they are the best of friends. He would bond just as strongly with another man in his forever home as long as he was given time to get to know him in a calm manner. When out walking we just ensure that strange men don’t come up to Jester and scare him. He has met plenty of women though and has been just fine.

Jester is completely house trained and has also been crate trained by his foster family. It is obvious though that Jester does not need the crate and he has been given the run of the house during the day even when no one is home. Jester is good with other dogs and has settled in nicely with his foster sister and brother. Jester would do as well in a home with another friendly, well behaved dog or being the only dog getting all the attention to himself. Jester does not like dogs to rush at him; he prefers a calm and settled meeting. This seems to be the key to Jesters happiness in greetings; limit the excitement, and keep things calm and settled. Jester is also good with his two foster cats and pretty much ignores them. Jester is not being fostered in a home with children and we believe that Jester needs to be placed in a home either without children or with older children (14+). Jester also tries to show his affection by jumping up and hugging you. His foster family is working with him to correct this behavior but it could be scary for anyone not expecting it or younger children. Jester is very loving and affectionate with his people. He likes to sit next to you and snuggle up. He will be a dog that will be exceptionally loyal to his people and will be a wonderful companion.

Jester has had basic training and knows sit, lie down, give paw and time for bed. He is food and toy motivated and gets emotional when he is reprimanded. Jester’s new family must commit to continuing his obedience training to bring out the best in this very smart boy. In the end, you will have a devoted family member that has all the love in the world to give. Dogs are very cute and hard to resist but they do require a lot of time commitment and are not for everyone. Anyone interested in Jester should be familiar with Border Collies and previous ownership of one would be ideal but not essential. They are a working breed so need daily interaction and exercise. He will not be happy just going out in the yard; he needs daily walks and/or runs. Jester’s rough start is not holding him back. He is looking for a forever home to share his life with. If you are looking for a dog who is happy to be by your side but who is also independent, loyal and super sweet, Jester may just be the perfect one for you!
