My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

(POLYDACTAL) This is Hemingway, a gray and white male kitten that is looking for his forever home. He loves people and likes to be close by most of the time. He will play by himself, with his foster feline brother or anyone who is interested. He has just enough energy to not be a boring cat. Hemingway knows the word ‘No’ and is quickly learning boundaries. At night he likes to fall asleep on a ‘pillow’ of the human variety. Hemingway is a tall boy, who is super sweet and great with kids and the resident cat.

He was named after author Ernest Hemingway, who was a famous aficionado of polydactyl cats, after being first given a six-toed cat by a ship's captain. Upon Hemingway's death in 1961, his former home in Key West, Florida, became a museum and a home for his cats, and it currently houses approximately fifty descendants of his cats (about half of which are polydactyl). Because of his love for these animals, polydactyl cats are sometimes referred to as "Hemingway Cats".

Polydactyl cats are definitely unique, but their needs are no different than those of your average, 18-toed feline. Here are two fun facts about polydactyl cats: (1) Polydactyl cats usually have extra toes on their front paws. These added digits aren’t opposable, so don’t worry! Fluffy won’t start opening jars of catnip at 3am, (2) back in the day, polydactyl cats were considered good luck at sea. Their added toes helped them maintain better balance when the ships hit rough waters.

Behaviorally and socially, it’s best to adopt kittens in pairs, or into a home with a playful cat. Hemingway would love a playmate in his forever home…and then they can get to play, and snuggle while you're not home. Check out our website to see if you can find a buddy for him. Or, if there is already another playful cat or kitten in your house, that would work out too…he already proved he is great at making friends!

If you are only interested in adopting a single kitten, and you’re home most of the day, and able to spend interactive time with a kitten, we will consider adopting out a kitten older than 4 months. Each foster home knows the kitten’s personalities best, and we follow their recommendations for single placements. Hemingway’s foster family has agreed to an adoption as a single kitten if this criteria is met.

Hemingway’s estimated date of birth is 8/26/15. His adoption fee of $135 includes his vet exam, FVRCP vaccinations, FIV & Feline Leukemia testing (neg), routine deworming, flea control, microchip and neuter.
