Rio has been living at our shelter for over 3 years now and we are hoping that someone will give this guy a chance for a forever home. He was a stray, malnourished and eating out of trashcans before we got him. He has a small amount of arthritis in his back and takes Rimadyl as needed. Rio needs an experienced dog owner because he is very protective over his food because of his past experience of not having any. We believe that Rio was a hunting dog that was either abandoned or lost and never found by his owner. He is hand shy so we suspect he may have been abused prior to us rescuing him. He has some stubbornness in him but once you know how to manage him he does well.

Now for the good things about Rio. He is healthy. He loves to go for walks and enjoys time outside. He does great with cats and other dogs. He LOVES to have his BELLY RUBBED and he likes to sit close to his people. He is housetrained and will bark when he wants to go out. His bark is the typical loud hound bark. He is a good watchdog and will alert you when someone comes to the door. He likes to play with toys, especially plushy ones that he can destroy!!! He enjoys car rides and trips to the park.

Rio needs an understanding, patient family that will accept his quirks and be mindful of his needs and personality. He loves to eat so green beans and carrots make a good treat for him. If given the chance, he will eat, eat, eat, and become overweight so a strict diet with healthy treats is best for Rio.
