My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

~adoption fee applies – if serious about adoption please email caarescue@gmail.com~

My name is Fox! Well it is now, as that is what my foster family calls me and I seem to suit it well. I think they are awesome so they can call me whatever they want, since it was them who drove to the off island gas-kill pound to rescue me after I was found wandering the cold winter streets.

I am an active young dog who loves to play and explore the world with my people. Though I am only about 5 pounds, I am actually bigger and hardier than most chihuahuas; very tall, sporty and strong. That's why the folks at CAA Rescue and Animal 911 Vet Hospital believe I am also part terrier!

In foster care I live with two older chihuahuas. At first I was not super interested in hanging out with them, but after a few weeks I am learning they can be fun to play and cuddle with. When I meet dogs more on my level, energy, age and size wise, then my playfulness really comes out. Meeting bigger dogs seems to be a bit of new experience for me, so sometimes I will bark and bark at them if they come too close. I do like my personal space. But though I can act insecurely, I am not at all aggressive! With more positive experiences with dogs, I am quickly learning how to make new friends the right way. I think obedience classes would be a great way for my new family to help me learn more about proper doggy socialization.

I absolutely LOVE my walks! While the other chihuahuas are hiding under the covers trying to avoid the rain or cold, I am totally 110% ready to put on my sweater and go for walks with you at any time! And I walk so nicely on a leash. Sometimes the outside world can be a bit overly exciting though, so occasionally I will bark at loud cars or fast runners. But with more exposure to the routine of daily walks, I am learning to be more focused. I also love to play fetch!! I am also ok with car rides.

I am house trained and know to do my business outside in the yard. I am already in the habit of going out on a schedule. Once I learn the rules of the house, I will even go to the door to tell you when I have to go. But I am still a bit of a puppy, so of course one must expect that if they adopt me I will have accidents in the home at the beginning, while I learn the new routine and adjust to the change in environment.

So far I have been left alone in foster care for up to 4 hours at a time. I am crated whenever alone and have no issues with barking or destruction.

I am a chihuahua/terrier so I do bark at home– it is just my nature. I am not excessive about it, but my bark is big, and I will use it when people are coming in the door or when I'm being playful.

I am very curious to meet new people, but know that I can be a bit hand-shy at first, so please go slow. That said, because I am such a loyal guy, once you're in, you're in, and all I want to do from then on is follow you around, be on your lap, get rubs, and play with toys together. Just watch me with my foster mummy and you will see how cuddly and sweet life can be with me.

I show no signs of toy possession issues in foster care, though I can get a little growly while I'm eating. I use my growl to effectively communicate when I am uncomfortable, but I have never snapped. And I like to use my mouth to play, but am always gentle. I am also very treat motivated, so if you are up to speed on positive reinforcement techniques, you and I will get along just fine!

Due to my mild nervousness with hands, I will not be looking for a home with children under 13.

There are no cats in my foster home so we do not know how I would be in a home with them.

My foster mama has this to say about me: "Fox is such a great dog, he makes me laugh everyday, and is really the best of both worlds: intensely loyal and cuddly, wanting nothing more than to be by your side at all times, just like a chihuahua. But he is also adventurous, active and strong, ready to explore the world, just like a terrier. He's really like a big sporty dog in a little adorable dog body. He's smart and engaged, eager to learn and to please his person. Though he does have some initial physical trust issues, and needs a bit more practice hanging with other dogs, the tremendous transformation Fox has made in foster care in such a short time demonstrates that this young dog is really just looking to move forward in life. With a gentle, assertive guiding hand, he will quickly become the very best pal! And he's just so gorgeous! (I think he looks like a mini Shiba Inu, the dog that looks like a fox!)
