Dixie's Story...

This dog's fosterhome is located in: ****Mastic Beach, New York**** Can you say hello to Miss Dixie?  Dixie is a tiny little girl, about 10 pounds.  We know someone used to love her, because she was spayed, housebroken and kept on heartworm preventive.  Then how in the world was she dumped at a lakeside park and how did she end up at a rural shelter on death row?  We sure can't explain it, but she's safe now, in a ResQ foster home.  Dixie was found abandoned at the park, terrified and with an injured foot.  Dixie loves attention, and just melts in your lap when you pick her up.  But she is still a bit timid, and will run and hide if you chase her.  It's best to just sit down and call her.  She'll come to you, with her whole body wagging in excitement.  Dixie is estimated to be about 3 or 4 years old.  She is housebroken, and depends on you to let her outside or use a doggie door.  She is quiet and docile, and seems to love everyone.  But people walking upright towards her still frightens her, for now.  We think she would do okay in a home with older children, but fast-moving toddlers would probably scare her.  Whoever adopts her will need to give her a week or so to adjust to new surroundings, because she's been through a lot in her short life.  Her rear foot was injured while she was a stray, and two of the toes were broken and healed crooked, but that doesn't slow her down one bit.  She uses her foot just fine!  For photos of Miss Dixie in her foster home, check her album often.  You can find it here:

Why Adoption is a Great Option

Dixie, a Winston-Salem Rat Terrier dog was adopted! Here's how you can benefit by looking at adoption as an option to buying a Rat Terrier for sale in Winston-Salem, or seeking a Rat Terrier dog from a breeder in Winston-Salem.

  1. Rescues and shelter volunteers in Winston-Salem already know the personality and tendencies of their pets. This means they can match you with the right pet. That will makes it much easier transition to owning a pet for yourself and your new pet.
  2. On average adoption fees are much less than you'd pay a Winston-Salem breeder, or pet store. Plus most often rescue pets have already been to the veterinarian for a check-up, had a round of vaccinations, and are spayed or neutered. That is a lot of savings!
  3. You will become a hero, and give a needy dog or cat a loving home. In fact, there are even Rat Terrier breeders who help with Rat Terrier rescue. One puppy or kitten adopted in Winston-Salem paves the way for another one to be saved.
