Here's what the humans have to say about me:
We all know how we get that awww feeling when we see an adorable puppy. Nina is the kind of girl who snuggles in, loves you up and then puts her head on your shoulder. She's so sweet (while being initially shy) and truly kind with every possibility open to her. That's the case unless a dog like Nina is in a high-kill shelter that quickly runs out of space or on the streets hiding in the shadows. We're so grateful for the efforts of our great rescuer in Tijuana, Mexico for saving Nina from abuse and certain euthanasia. She could see that her temperament was so sweet and her need so great that she couldn't turn her back on this very special pup. Nina was immediately brought to be vetted, given the appropriate vaccinations, spayed, granted a health certificate and brought to a dog-loving foster to begin her education as a cherished house dog.
When we think of rescue, our thoughts don't usually go onto the tough streets of Tijuana. But these forgotten dogs deserve our help every bit as much as their US counterparts. They all have been used for opportunistic purposes...to either breed and discard or to sell as a puppy to a Mexican mill or rich tourists. Virtually all of them have lived on the streets and survived by learning to be social. They love people because compassionate tourists were their means of survival. They can sit in any language and fit quietly into any scene to earn a treat or discarded meal.
This was the life waiting for Nina...just 8 months old and approximately 11 lbs (estimated to be about 15 lbs when full-grown). This is such a perfect size to be able to accompany her family just about anywhere and fit right in due to her great temperament. Nina is already starting to understand that sweet, cuddly and cooperative behavior makes great things happen in life. She was one of the extremely lucky young dogs to master her socialization skills at a very early age and endear herself to the US rescuers. There was no way that Nina was going to be left behind! We all had a clear picture of this very sweet and fun-loving pup in a forever Colorado home with a family that cherishes her for life.
As Nina becomes comfortable in her home, she will become a fuzzy ball of good-will that loves to please - the happier her family is with her behavior, the more she will shine with her accomplishments.
We would like to see Nina in a home that includes her in family time and activities (and some lap or couch-time would be perfect!)... and takes that extra step to participate in positive reinforcement obedience classes. These classes take a very smart dog like Nina and teaches them the skills to fit into a great family member that can behave appropriately in any situation.
Nina would also be a wonderful companion for active retirees who have the time and desire to be best friends with a truly adorable young pup. Nina would enjoy another gentle dog to play with...she's so sweet and gentle as she puts her positive energy into enjoying the day with a fun friend.
Nina was identified as a Cairn Terrier/Norfolk Terrier mix by her Tijuana rescuer. This is difficult to determine with certainty, but we can definitely see both adorable scruffy and engaging breeds in this very sweet dog.
Nina appears to be a non-shedding (or maybe a hair or two) girl with the most beautiful golds and silvers running through her gorgeous hair that speaks of her breed mix. Nina will therefore require a commitment to periodic grooming and great nutrition (a salmon oil supplement would be great) to keep her hair healthy and matt-free.
