My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Benedict: 2 to 4 yr old, male, Silver Shaded Persian

Benedict is a sweet little Persian boy. His story is unclear. He was brought to a shelter as a “stray." The shelter found he was covered with fleas, a bit thin, and his undercoat was largely missing. He was on the Needs Rescue List from a shelter which means he was not going up for adoption. I asked to foster him immediately.

We took him right to the vet.. After very carefully examining him, the vet gave his age as 2 to 4, probably closer to 2. I myself saw his perfect little white teeth. A blood panel showed him to be healthy except for anemia which she attributed to all the flea bites. She determined that it was his excessive scratching for weeks, or months, that had removed his undercoat. Poor boy. Other than the effects of the fleas, he was a healthy young kitty. Benedict is a good eater and started gaining weight right away. He is up about a pound, to 7+ pounds.

So this little guy was friendly to us from day one. Silver Shaded kitties tend to think the world revolves around them or that it should, and they can be very demanding, carefully training their humans. Benedict is more good-natured than that. He is a cooperative and a very tender, loving kitty. Perhaps his demanding side will emerge later.

Since he was eating well and settling in nicely, after a week, we decided it was time for a bath. Bath Day for Benedict ! He was surprisingly patient with us and stood still, mostly standing on his hind legs as four hands scrubbed and washed him.We used a flea comb to try to scrape off the flea poop which blackened his skin on his stomach. We are used to bathing cats who have had bad fleas. but Benedict’s bath was upsetting. His bath water turned brown from dirt and red from flea dirt. It was worse than we expected. What on earth could be this adorable little boy’s history?

So now he is ready for a new family. He needs a stable, quiet, inside-only home. These little Persian treasures need to be cherished and carefully protected, they are so vulnerable in the world. Benedict would probably be all right with a gentle cat companion. I don’t know about dogs. I think a home without young children would be best for him. His new humans need to be home much of the time and be ready to give him lots of love. He will entertain you, cuddle you, and give you his whole heart.

I will get more photos of him asap. It is hard to see his eyes in the photos below. They are green.

He eats wet and dry food and is litterbox perfect.

His foster mom is Harriet in Santa Cruz.
