Candy is a stunning 2 year old black retriever mix who somehow found herself in a high kill shelter in Vermillon Parish, Louisiana. We will never know where this gentle girl spent the first few years of her life, but it is apparent that she was once someone’s pet and we wonder… When Candy was lost, where was her family and why was there no one frantically searching for their beloved pal? This tender soul was in a very scary and dangerous situation - not being a bouncy, bundle-of-fluff puppy and being black in coloring, the color least adopted, Candy's life was in danger. Although Candy did not deserve this disloyalty from her family, she holds no grudge and is happy and grateful for each day. She is the most loving girl you will ever meet, and the most wonderful thing about Candy is her heart and spirit. Our black beauty has never met a stranger and will greet you with a look that seems to say, "Hi, I’m Candy – SO nice to meet you!" You can tell when you meet Candy that she longs to belong.
One of the volunteers in the south who helped transport Candy to the safety of our rescue shared, “She's a beautiful dog with long wavy fur. She has little bits of brown on her front paws and each ear with the rest of her coat shiney black. She knows how to shake hands and insisted on staring me straight in the eye, seeming to ask me if I was her new mom. I was not permitted to stop petting her except for the one time she rolled on her back to get her tummy rubbed. My arms and face were thoroughly licked! She will make a loyal companion to some lucky person!”
Candy loves fetching tennis balls and will sit on command while she waits for her human to throw the ball. She gets along nicely with other dogs and is a lively girl who would make a wonderful companion for walks, runs, or hikes. Candy will prance along, with her head held high, sniffing the air and taking in all the sites along the way. Whatever your day calls for, it is just fine with Candy, just as long as she is with you.
Candy weighs about 50 Lbs, has been spayed, brought up-to-date on vaccinations, and is micro-chipped. Since Candy tested positive for heartworm, she in under heartworm treatment and will be ready to go to her forever home in mid-to-late April. Although we will never know Candy’s full story, we do know that the family who opens their heart and makes this wonderful girl a part of their life will receive a very special gift - a pup who loves with every fiber of her being and only asks to spend her days surrounded by the warmth of a of a loving owner. She deserves nothing less!!!!
Black "Goldens...?"
Since the early 2000’s, animal rescue workers have noticed an increasing phenomena called, “Black Dog Syndrome,” which is that black dogs tend to be adopted more slowly than dogs of other coloring. As a result, there are more black dogs in shelters, and black dogs have a higher euthanization rate – purely because of the color of their coat! In a recent survey done by the adoption website “Petfinder,” Petfinder member shelters and rescue groups reported that most pets are listed for 12.5 weeks on Petfinder, whereas, less-adoptable pets (such as black, senior, and special needs pets) spend almost four times as long on Petfinder.
You may ask, "what does this have to do with a Golden Retriever rescue?" SGRR often goes a step further than basic rescue, by taking in dogs that might be thought of as “less adoptable” because of their physical condition. We have expanded that to include these special black dogs, many often thought to be Golden mixes. Since doing so, we have seen an overwhelming interest in these “black goldens,” and note we begin getting inquiries about them the minute we publish their pictures on our site! Like all of our dogs, these pups are just looking for a family that can see beyond their coloring to their true “golden heartedness,” and to love them and make them their own! Those who can, will be glad they did!

About Our Rescue
Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.
The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

**Please note: The fees listed represent a slight increase and are effective for applications received after June 1 2014. We regret the need to increase the fees for our dogs, but found it necessary due to the increased costs we are faced with for each dog's care and placement.
A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.
Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.
