Grandpaw (also known as Bentley) is a white and tan shih tzu, 13 lbs and at least 10 years old. The last two pics on the page are the most recent ones (April 2017). He's been here since March 2016 and is one of the staff favorites. His family turned him in because of a child's allergies. He is now blind- his left eye was removed early this year because of a painful ulcer, and he can't see out of the other one. His foster mom is taking him to a canine eye specialist to see if he can get some sight back. But he is in otherwise good health and enjoys hanging with his favorite people and walking around the yard. A volunteer has been teaching him to recognize direction commands so that he knows where to walk- he's very good with "left" and is learning the others.
He would be a great companion dog. He's very calm and quiet (never barks) and is just happy to hang out with you, whether you're sitting or walking around the yard or going on a car trip. He doesn't like walking on a leash- he'd rather be carried or walk along by himself. Very good about his house training. He'd be great for an apartment.
Great with kids, cats, and big and small dogs. He's never snapped at anyone and is always good mannered. He's one of our best tempered dogs. Loves being scratched.
Because of past health issues, such as anemia, he's on a high quality diet.
In addition, he has a high maintenance coat. He will need frequent brushing, grooming, and bathing (especially if he's outside often- he likes to roll around in the dirt!).
Because he's in a foster home, please call ahead or email to set up an appointment.
