Grandpaw (also known as Bentley) is an adorable 10 year old shih tzu. About 12 pounds. He doesn't see very well, but he gets around easily and is in good shape- he can follow a volunteer all the way around our sanctuary. He was turned in from a home in March 2016 because a child was allergic to him. Very calm guy. Great companion dog. He just likes being right where you are, whether it's sitting at your feet or following you around, but is fine if you are not there. We would definitely recommend him for a family - perhaps those of you who have kiddos who are afraid of the hyperactive/big pooches. He is just a love!
Potty trained! He should be fine for an apartment or townhouse. He's good with kids, cats, and all dogs, even big dogs. He'd be fine in a home with other pets or just by himself. He knows some commands, such as "follow me" and "come here", and can walk on a leash.
He might be our sweetest dog- he has never growled at anyone, and never gets into mischief. The only time he barks is when he wants to be with someone- when a door is separating him from his person. He doesn't bark at strangers or passing trucks. He does well on car rides.
Grandpaw's main issue is that sometimes he needs help eating because of his strangely shaped jaw. If eating kibble, he does best with the very small kind, such as Organix for small breeds. He also doesn't seem to have a problem with chicken.
In addition, he has a high maintenance coat. He will need frequent brushing, grooming, and bathing (especially if he's outside often- he likes to roll around in the dirt!).
A staff favorite!
