Maya is a sweet and loving dog who is very people-oriented, and also very friendly with all dogs, big and small. She does not have an aggressive bone in her nature, is not food possessive or toy possessive, and is generally submissive in a pack of dogs. She can be playful; she loves to run and leap around the yard, chase toys, and would LOVE another playful dog in the home (Maya can become excitable for a short period, especially when meeting new people or dogs or engaging in a playful streak), but can also settle down quite nicely too. If there is nothing going on, she is mostly quietly lying next to me on a pet bed. She is fine with children (her former adoptive home had three children) but Maya still occasionally jumps up onto people to be petted or to say hi. I am working with her on this. She is extremely affectionate, and loves to give her people kisses. Maya is not a barker. She rides very well in the car and walks well on the leash using a prong collar to stop her from pulling.

Maya was returned to the rescue from her adoptive home two years later due to health issues of the wife. The first time that Maya came to the rescue, she was a six-month-old puppy and was acquired from people who had too many dogs. Maya’s age is now between 2 ½ to 3 years, but still has a lot of puppy in her. We know her breed is Boxer/Beagle (we know her parentage) and Maya literally looks like a cross between the two breeds. But she has the general build of a Boxer and has the Boxer under-bite. She currently weighs about 42 lbs. We think she could stand to gain a few pounds more. Maya is crate-trained and sleeps quietly in a large wire crate at night and also crates well if I have to leave the house for a few hours.

The home we seek for Maya this second time around is as follows:

a) A home with a yard, (however, Maya MUST be an indoor dog; we do not adopt dogs to be excluded to the outdoors. Dogs can go outdoors for potty and play purposes, at will, or in the company of humans).

b) A home with another dog to be her pal. In her former adoptive home, her pal and housemate was a small dog, a Dachshund. It is not mandatory that the other dog be playful; being playful is merely a plus. Maya loves to play interactively with other playful dogs, even little dogs.

c) People who will cater a bit to her eating. Her former adopters free fed the dogs so she was used to nibbling throughout the day. This did not work well for Maya, as she needs more poundage and the other dog would sometimes eat her food. So we are re-gearing Maya’s brain to eat two meals a day on a schedule. I mix some wet food with the kibble, to give her some extra calories as she needs that right now. She is doing very well at this point, finishing her meals.

Maya is a GREAT dog. She is a smart dog who is responsive to instructions, well-behaved, easy to manage, and adapts to a routine quickly. She is spayed, de-wormed, up-to-date on her shots, and micro-chipped. She had a recent vet check and a blood work up. We also gave her a dental cleaning as she had some gingivitis that needed to be addressed. If you are interested in Maya, please contact Angel’s Heart Dog Rescue at: adopt@angelsheartdogrescue.com.
