Update 3/28/16: “Atty” has the sweetest personality that is emerging as he gets comfortable in his foster home. He is a cuddler and will climb up onto the couch to lie with his head in Foster Mom’s lap! He loves attention and wags his tail happily when spoken to. He is a good boy on a leash, and his Foster Mom feels he must have belonged to someone and lived as an inside dog in his prior life, as he has had no accidents and is well behaved. His foster mom tells us: “His face is so cute when I put my hands around it! He is cuter in person than his pictures.” She tells us that Atty gets along nicely with resident dog, Mae, he eats well, and sleeps well.. His skin is improving and his coat is just beginning to grow back in. Atty and resident dog Mae relaxed on the back deck in the sunshine, sniffing the air and napping. It is awesome to see life getting better for this sweet dog, who was so alone and frightened when we first met him at the shelter. He is a treasure waiting for someone to notice that he has a Golden soul through and through.
Background: Meet sweet Atticus! Of course this gentle, sensitive dog is named after Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird. He was found as a stray in Monroeville, AL, home town to author Harper Lee, and his rescuer wanted to honor her by naming this docile Southern gentleman after one of her fictional characters.
Atticus is estimated to be 7 years old and he is a complete love at 70 lbs. We think he is a Lab/Boxer mix, and he will steal your heart! We believe he had been neglected for quite a while, arriving at the shelter with a terrible skin infection, parasites, ear infections, and he tested heartworm positive. He is so special we had to say "yes" when asked to save him. Our volunteer who took his pictures said he could not have been more sweet or docile, “He approached me curiously and just loved me petting him and talking sweet to him. He is one of those dogs that makes me wish I had room for one more!”
Atticus soaks up love and attention from everyone at the shelter, where he is a big favorite. He likes other dogs and is very passive with cats. Take a look at this video of gentle Atticus being cat-tested at the shelter. Please check back for updates on Atticus as he gets through his heartworm treatment and we learn more about this wonderful dog. Atticus will be ready for his forever home in mid to late April.

About Our Rescue
Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.
The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

**Please note: The fees listed represent a slight increase and are effective for applications received after June 1 2014. We regret the need to increase the fees for our dogs, but found it necessary due to the increased costs we are faced with for each dog's care and placement.
A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.
Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.
