SWESR would like to thank Manny's Virtual Fosters Tina and Brian C. for their generous donation toward Manny's care.
Manny is a handsome tri-color field type English Setter. He weighs 48 pounds and is 10 years young. But do not let his age fool you because this boy looks and acts like a youngster and is still going very strong.
Typical of his breed in stature and temperament, Manny is a friendly, charming and happy boy with plenty of energy so he will need an active human and a large yard with at least a 5 foot physical fence where he can really stretch out to run and play. He is one of those graceful setters when he runs and he springs, bounces and glides as he makes his way around the yard self-exercising. He is lean, fit, and agile. Manny likes playing with balls and toys. After he gets to know another dog he can be playful and he is playful and interactive with people too.
Like most English Setters his preference is to be wherever his humans are, especially living in the home as a family member where he can snuggle up with you on the couch or sleep by your feet. If he is able to get plenty of exercise he calms down quickly when he is in the house. He knows sit and is attentive and obedient to verbal corrections. We are looking for a home with furniture privileges for Manny because relaxing on the couch after running in the yard is one of his favorite things to do. And if you are on the couch with him he will likely be touching you and may gently crawl in your lap.
Manny is a confident and independent English Setter and might be the alpha dog in the right pack. He is in a foster home where he gets along with the 'dog sociable' dogs and he is great with the cats. He does fine with other dogs after he gets to know them, but when meeting new dogs he may posture and grumble. We supervise his introductions and as long as he is with someone that is dog behavior savvy this is easy to recognize and verbally correct. And within hours or days he can be running and playing with the 'dog sociable' dogs. Other dogs with socialization issues will take longer and careful acclimation. He does like to engage in physical play with other dogs, but he can quickly learn to leave senior dogs and smaller dogs alone. He is also learning to leave the anti-social grumbly dogs in the foster home alone.
He is very birdy so he will need to be trained and taught a proper recall for his own safety. Like most English Setters he will take the opportunity to bolt and run if there is an open door or gate and he is very fast so for that reason he should be in a home without children or seniors who may not be quick enough for Manny. His ideal home will have a stay or work at home person so he has plenty of opportunity to exercise outside. He would not be a candidate for staying outside when his people are not home because of his escape drive. He does well with a doggy door where he can come and go, as long as there a secure yard with a physical fence and locks on the gates.
He was house-trained using a doggy door. He shows no significant signs of previous abuse and he is looking for a best friend to love him. He would like another dog to run and play with; but he would also do fine as an only dog with an active human companion who is around a lot and wants to take him places.
We do not consider Manny an 'easy' setter or a good choice for someone looking for their first English Setter. He will do best with a person that is gentle but firm and not a 'push over'. For someone looking for that inquisitive, active, driven, confident type of Setter, he will make a fantastic companion. Because he has so much opportunity to self-exercise and play in his foster home, he is wonderful in the house and will snuggle up to you, look at you with his gorgeous brown eyes and lay his head in your lap.
Manny's adoption fee is $200. He is fostered in a home near Austin, Texas
