This handsome Chesapeake Bay Retriever mix was found as a stray by the sister of one of our foster moms in South Carolina. She lives on a farm and when she noticed a young pup running around her yard, she assumed he was a dog from one of her neighbors. She gave him some food and water, and then left on vacation for a week. When she returned, little Riley was still there and looking a little too thin for her liking, so she took him in fearing he had been abandoned and called DDB for help.

Riley is a fun, playful, active young dog who’s about 1-1.5 years old and weighs 45 pounds. He looks bigger in his pictures than he is, with the body of a mini Lab/Retriever. He's a very handsome dog with gorgeous hazel eyes and a striking auburn coat that really make him stand out. He loves to play, and is currently being fostered with 3 other large dogs, who quickly accepted Riley into their pack. He has a different relationship with each dog, but is respectful with all of them and understands his place in the pack. He is a confident dog who would do well with another playful pup in his home.

Riley came into rescue as a goofy puppy who needed to learn the rules of home life, and his foster parents have done a great job working with him and teaching him good doggy manners. He's crate and potty trained, knows his basic commands, and walks pretty well on leash too. He’s active, but also a sweet, affectionate pup who loves to snuggle.  When his foster dad sits on the floor, Riley will come right over and curl up beside him to rest his head in his lap. He wants to be right by your side

This handsome young pup is going to make some lucky owner very happy. Riley loves to be outside exploring, so a fenced back yard and another active young dog to romp and play with would be ideal for him. An active family with kids (10+) would be great too. He needs an owner who will lead him, love him, give him structure, commit to his daily walks and playtime, and enjoy having a cool dog to hang out with

Riley was initially fostered with a cat, and he likes to play with them and will try to chase, but is not aggressive towards cats.

You can also help save dogs like this one by becoming a foster, providing a rescue dog with a temporary home and giving them the love and care they need until they are permanently adopted. Every person who fosters is directly responsible for saving the life of a dog, because we can only save as many dogs as we have foster families available to welcome them into their homes. If you think you might be interested in becoming a foster and want to learn more, please go to http://foster.ddbnova.org and fill out an application.

About Dogs Deserve Better of Northern Virginia

About Our Rescue Group...

Dogs Deserve Better, 2003 First Place Winner of the ASPCA/Chase Pet Protector Award, is a voice for chained and penned dogs, whose sadness speaks only through the eyes. As the days become years, many of these dogs sit, lay, eat, and defecate within the same 10-foot radius. Chained by the neck, they exist without affection, exercise, social interaction, and sometimes even basic nourishment. They live as prisoners, yet long to be pets.

Chaining is not only inhumane for dogs, but is dangerous to the community. Chained dogs, unsocialized with humans, can become very territorial of their tiny space, and anyone who wanders into this space can be attacked.

Would you for one second choose to live the life of these dogs? No matter what reason is given, the bottom line is that it is NOT ok to chain a dog for life. Dogs should not have to live chained or penned as prisoners, yearning for a place in a family, craving acknowledgement, respect, and love. They DESERVE BETTER, and we as caretakers have the obligation to provide it for them.

Come Meet Our Pets...

Our dogs are located in foster homes in the DC Metro area. Please go to http://adopt.ddbnova.org and fill out an application, and once you have been approved, we can schedule a meeting with a dog who will be a good fit for your home.

Our Adoption Process...

The first step in the process is to complete an adoption application at http://adopt.ddbnova.org.
Secondly, we will set up a time for you to meet the dog in his or her foster home. If the visit goes well and the dog appears to be a good fit for your home, the next step is the home visit. Finally, the official adoption contract is signed and the adoption fee is paid.
