My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Benji is a 10 yr old male Golden Retriever. He's about 65 - 70lbs.

Benji is a sweet big guy, who was surrendered, but without details about his former life. He is a retriever with true golden devotion. He is easy to love and seems to really appreciate the attention he gets - he loves to snuggle and have his tummy rubbed. He is about 10ish years old, but based on his energy level, could be younger and may have lived a rough life for awhile (which would make his muscle appear older than it is). He is very well-behaved and is very smart, understanding most basic commands as well as alot of non-verbal cues (putting shoes on, getting his pills out of the cupboard, etc). He seems to really like having a routine, and learned ours very quickly. And, he communicates with you when it is time for something on the routine to happen.

The most prominent characteristic of his is that he really needs/likes companionship. He seems to understand who his primary caretaker is, and stays with that person underfoot or footstep for footstep most of the time! He his fine when left alone, but obviously would be happiest in a home with someone who is going to be around most of the day. Benji's other favorite pastime is going on walks and is sure to remind you of this daily. He is good on a leash, but is a super sniffer so some days there are a lot of stops to be made, like many male golden retrievers before him! Benji is also a very talkative dog. He has a sweet whine when he wants to get your attention. When he is excited he has a very funny bark that sounds more like talking than barking. He likes to 'communicate' when he sees other dogs or sees a person who is not immediately making the effort to befriend him.

Benji is great with kids and is very playful and energetic. He likes to play Frisbee and rope, and sometimes ball. He definitely likes to meet other dogs and is very friendly with them. If he gets super excited (such as at a dog park) he has a tendency to try and dominate the other dogs by mounting them (almost like a nervous reaction to too many dogs being around). But has not been aggressive toward any dog - just almost too friendly, actually. He has no history with cats.

Benji needs continued training in the area of people food stealing, as he loves to get a hold of anything he can if he can reach it. Also, he gets very, very excited to go in the car. If he has a window to stick his head out, he does okay. If not, he 'talks' during the car ride (his funny, very loud bark).

Benji would be a great match for a family looking to have a loving, obedient dog as part of their family or a person(s) who are home most of the time and looking for some true companionship!

Benji is having a few issues with seizures. He is being seen by a neurologist and we are working to regulate his medication. He'll need a few follow up visits in the meantime for which GRFR will cover the costs until his meds are at the level necessary to keep Benji as seizure free as possible.
