My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Murphy is a 4 year old Shepherd/Hound mix, a lean 57 pounds; he has no food aggression or animal aggression with the exception of cats--he chases them. He is not usually fond of little dogs but mostly because they yip at him. If they are friendly to him he is friendly back.

Murphy is a sweet dog with a bunch of personality quirks. I got him as a rescue without background info. Due to unforeseen circumstances, I am moving and can't take Murphy with me.

Murphy is definitely NOT a watch dog. He'll let anybody in who will play with him. He has the run of the house and is not destructive. He has a voracious appetite and especially loves cheese and treats.

Murphy's biggest life goal is to catch squirrels and he has had a couple of successes but for the most part they are safe.

He is content to play in the fenced-in back yard but sometimes indicates he'd rather be out front. He's a people watcher.

He doesn't bark much and when he does I can yell out "Murphy, no barking" and he will generally stop. He will bark at bikes, cats and squirrels.

Murphy does what we call "the crazies" - about twice daily he will suddenly begin running through the house at top speed. He makes the loop from front to back about 5 times and then just stops. It burns off energy for him.

He loves to play tug of war and fetch with those flat animals with squeekers in them. He will often entertain himself , shaking and tossing them in the air . He's learning to drop them so they can be thrown.

Murphy is uncomfortable being cuddled or restrained around his head and chest. He will struggle to get free. Yet, he is very loving and will lay on the sofa as long as you do with his head in your lap or close to your feet.

He has some trouble settling when visitors come, which would improve I believe in a home with more traffic than mine gets. He just doesn't get enough practice.

Murphy loves to go for walks.
He does not like fireworks and thunder but no longer panics at the sounds.

It is my opinion that Murphy was either abused or on his own for a significant time as he is something of a wuse. His confidence has increased tremendously over the past 2 years but he learns best if he is admonished by a firm, serious voice. Yelling at him sends him cowering in a corner.

He is easy to groom as his fur is more like hair that sheds in individual hairs. He loves to be brushed.
