âHeartache was what our staff member felt seeing sweet scaredâ Brewster cower in the " 5 pm " kennnel at ACS (Suffice to say that " 5pm Dogs" that don't have a home by 5:00 pm become a city statistic). This poor sweet boy was an owner surrender, citing "escape artist" as the reason for surrender. But we aren't dummies. The condition of poor Brewster told a story of neglect and starvation and of a sweet scared dog needing a second chance and a new lease on life. In the week that we have had him he has started to come out of his shell - not sure of other dogs at first he has settled in and become part of the pack in his temporary foster home. With an intelligence and an attentiveness that bring to mind qualities in service dogs we think Brewster just needs some time to learn to trust - to trust that he won't be thrown outside with no food or water, that human contact does not just consist of a kick in the ribs and that, AS WE ALL KNOW, man and dog really ARE meant to be BEST FRIENDS.
Brewster is not a huge fan of a crate but will settle in after a little complaining and, if you leave the door open and let him go in and out on his own, it becomes his safe place. He will actually kennel himself. Brewster seems to be house trained and likes to walk on a leash - with each day this sweet boy's true heart shows more and more each day. AND makes us say GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR to his previous owners.
