Back in April, our rescue was set to get a Golden Retriever puppy from a shelter in MS when a twist of fate saved the life of another dog on their euthanasia list. It seems a man drove several hours to this shelter to adopt the puppy and although the pup was promised to our rescue, the man was allowed to take the pup home. When Lisa (our rescuer in the south) expressed her displeasure, the shelter worker told Lisa about another Golden Retriever who was scheduled to be put to sleep because he was heartworm positive and had a history of ear infections. Could you imagine putting a dog to sleep for reasons such as this? Well, this was Patrick’s lucky day because SGRR stepped in and Patrick's life was spared.
Patrick was adopted in the south in May and has lived a nice life with his mom and canine sibling. He came into our rescue a diamond in the rough, with little to no house manners. The staff members at the vet’s office had witnessed this athletic fellow jump straight up like a mountain goat to land on the examination table or reception counter where he would lay down and hang out! He was a big counter-surfer back then too. His new mom took him to obedience school and Patrick was awarded a diploma! She has worked with him to teach him what is acceptable and what a good doggy should not do inside the house. He has come a long way from the uncivilized fellow that he was a few months ago! Unfortunately, Patrick is too much dog for his adopter, with too much energy for her to handle. Putting her own sadness aside, she has reached out to our rescue to find Patrick a more active home.
Four year-old Patrick’s ideal home would have a yard with a tall and sturdy fence as this boy can jump high! This hunky fellow needs an active owner who can provide him with adequate exercise and who will continue to teach him the rules of the house. Patrick adores children and loves other dogs. Kitties, however, are just way too interesting for him. This handsome boy is strong on the lead and will need an adopter to work on his leash skills. Patrick is a smart dog who will benefit greatly from a additional obedience sessions, which is a wonderful way for an adopter and their new dog to bond. His new owners must be committed to ensuring he gets the continued training and direction that he needs.
A cute little side-note about Patrick: When he was kenneled at the vet's office in AL, during his heartworm treatment, he was a staff favorite. In his indoor/outdoor kennel run, Patrick would drag his blankie outside as though setting up to have himself a picnic. He is quite the character and gives everyone he meets a few laughs.
Patrick is up-to-date on vaccinations, neutered and micro-chipped. He was treated for heartworm in April and is now heartworm free. He will be ready to come north to his forever home in early to mid October. This beautiful boy is not going to last!

About Our Rescue
Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.
The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

**Please note: The fees listed represent a slight increase and are effective for applications received after June 1 2014. We regret the need to increase the fees for our dogs, but found it necessary due to the increased costs we are faced with for each dog's care and placement.
A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.
Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.
