My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Duke: ~4-year-old male yellow Lab mix 58 lbs

Duke was recently surrendered to the Yolo County shelter when his family lost their home and had to move in with relatives. He lived as a mostly outside dog with a dog friend, and a family with children ages 7-14. The family described Duke as a "very sweet dog, very playful, high energy, very kid friendly". They also said he was sometimes too much for small children, and that he likes to chase small animals. The former owners said that he used to often jump the family's short fence and go roaming the countryside, but that he always came home on his own. He was a good watchdog, and would bark and sometimes growl when strangers startled him at the house, especially threatening men.

What Duke’s Foster says: Duke is settling in wonderfully at our home. He gets along fine with our 2-year-old lab. Initially shy and skittish, he has come out of his shell and follows us around the house. While he does spend a lot of time chilling in his crate, he’d rather be in the same room as you are. He loves to go on walks in the neighborhood, and walks quite well on leash. He has shown some initial heightened interest in other dogs, but that quickly diminishes after the initial greeting. While he has chased the occasional ball and picked up the random squeaky toy, he has not shown an affinity for playing with toys or balls. He is quick to bark initially at people approaching the house, but will great them at the door with a happily-wagging tail. We are still crate-training him, and he currently sleeps in his crate throughout the night without a peep. We’ve even allowed him some off leash time at a nearby open space area… and his recall is terrific – it helps that he likes yummy treats. Beware: he has shown an affinity to counter-surf in the kitchen – we are working on that.

What Duke’s Rescue Rep says: Duke will benefit from obedience training with his new family. He’s probably 10+ pounds underweight and we are trying to put some quality pounds on him. His back legs are weak and the vet has found no skeletal issues with him, so we are hoping that plenty of exercise and good nutrition will strengthen his back legs. Duke is current on his vaccinations, heartworm negative, neutered, and microchipped. He is house-trained – Yaay! Duke is located in Berzerkeley.

(Please keep in mind we are all volunteers, most of us work full time and we all have personal lives. I do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient and I will be back in touch with you. When the dogs are in foster homes then it may take longer as we need to touch base with the fosters for updates on the dogs. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week and we do not have a facility that we keep the dogs housed in. They are scattered all over the Bay Area.)
