My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

All Pound Dog Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested, de-wormed (if required), and micro-chipped prior to adoption. The adoption donation of $400 is applied to assist in the costs of veterinary care and the overall care of the dog.

We at PDR firmly believe in the importance of obedience training, regardless of breed or size of dog, and have a clause in our adoption contract requiring adopters to attend and complete a basic obedience course at a facility of their choosing. Only in certain circumstances will we waive this clause, so please be prepared to attend dog school should you wish to apply for a dog through our program.

Hey everyone, meet Denver! He’s a 2-year old Beagle/Dachshund cross that is just a silly big suck looking for a forever family that will love him to bits and let him do all the doggy things he adores. Denver is a strong, stocky, medium sized dog weighing about 38lbs and is suspected to be part Standard Dachshund due to his awesome shorter legs!! Don’t let short legs fool you though Denver is a solid dude and LOVES playing tug-of-war with his people and going for walks around the neighbourhood. He also has a handsome red coat that is very smooth and silky to the touch. Denver is a just a big loveable guy waiting for just the right family to come along to complete theirs!

Let me tell you a little bit about Denver’s history and how he ended up with a second chance at life. Denver came into foster care after he was picked up as an unwanted stray from a rural pound. His owners were located and decided he was not worth the trouble of picking him up and bringing him home. This lack of loyalty his previous owners showed is completely contrary to the amount this great dog has to offer. Denver is nothing but a happy dog that wants to smell the trees, run in the yard and cuddle with his family in the evening. The cuddles are almost annoying as he will lie on you and you will feel too guilty to move him and mixed with his weight - ah good luck! That said, we now look at this as an opportunity for Denver to find his forever family that he clearly deserves to smother with love.

Beagles are known for their good nature and love for the outdoors. They are also scent hounds that love to track with their noses. Denver is interested in using his nose and sometimes this takes over almost all other functions in his brain that he does need some schooling to focus on his handlers and remain a good boy on leash. We would hate for Denver to wind up a stray again so he will need to remain leashed on walks so he cannot be tempted by a good scent and have owners with a securely fenced yard so he cannot escape. Denver has a deeper but soft sounding bark and isn’t afraid to use it. He has no issues going into his crate and currently eats both meals daily while crated. However, Denver is not a huge fan of being crated while his people away from home. Denver would definitely do better in a home where his owners could be with him more often than not for this loyal lad. He is not suitable for apartment or condo living as he can put up a fuss when initially crated. He will also need a fully fenced in yard that is secure and has no gaps or holes that he could squeeze through. We are looking for an adult only home for Denver or one with teenage children. He needs an active family that will ensure he gets a couple good, fast paced walks a day and play time in the yard.

We are confident Denver would do great as a second dog or part of a family with a feline as he has shown no issues with other animals since we’ve had him in our care. Denver also does well in the car although he prefers to ride shotgun if you happen to have no passengers!

Denver will need to maintain a fairly active lifestyle with his new family to help keep him entertained and in-shape. As Denver appears to have been neglected as a young pup he has learned very little house rules or manners. He is learning through proper obedience correction that jumping up on people or furniture is not okay and should not be promoted. Denver is however fully house trained and has had no issues adjusting to his new surroundings with frequent outdoor breaks and praising. Denver is very treat influenced and would do amazing in obedience school with his new family. We are presently working with Denver on simple commands such as, down, sit, stay and leave it. Given his interest in treats it won’t be difficult to keep this training up with his new forever family. This solid dude may have had a bad start to the beginning of his life but we are positive that with his carefree loveable attitude nothing will hold him back from a bright future! Now we just need to know, could he be the right dog to complete your family???
