My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

FOSTER LOCATION: Nampa, ID

Harry is a very lovable and cuddly 3-year-old Yorkshire Terrier. He wants to be right at your side or in your lap. Harry is n the largish size for a Yorkie, weighing in at slightly more than 9 lbs.

Like most terriers, Harry is a very active dog and will need a fenced yard to run around in. He will race around for minutes at a time to entertain himself, but also enjoys long walks. He will be happy to make sure those pesky squirrels stay out of the yard by chasing them off when they are taunting him from the top of the fence! He loves his chew toys, and needs sturdy ones as he can destroy a stuffy very quickly.

Harry is great with people, his own and strangers alike. He is not great with other dogs, however. Harry is territorial and will be aggressive with other dogs, particularly males. For this reason, Harry must go to a home with no other dogs. With his strong prey instinct, cats in the home would not be a good idea either.

Harry has had some training in his past He knows to come when called and to sit on command (if he is not too excited). He sits by his placemat at feeding time until you put his dish down and tell him he can eat. He also knows “off”. Harry walks well on a leash, and loves to ride in the car. He sleeps in his crate, although does not like being crated during the day when his people are home. He wants to be with you, not locked up in another room! He is not much of a barker, but will sound the alarm when someone comes to the door or a squirrel or bird dares to come into his yard. He will bolt out an open door (house or car) if given an opportunity, so more work on “stay” or “place” is needed. In the meantime, he needs to be restrained when the door is open.

Harry does know how to use a dog door and was house trained, but after spending some time around another male dog has developed a bad habit of marking in the house. We would expect, that getting Harry into his own house away from other dogs, and with consistent outings and positive reinforcement, he will revert to his house trained self.

Harry does have a strange quirk. He spins when he gets stressed, always in one direction. This behavior shouldn’t be encouraged. All you need to do is redirect his attention to get the spinning to stop. Harry is a sensitive soul, who needs to be loved for himself without competition for the attention of his people from other pets.

Yorkies have long, silky hair that if left long, needs daily brushing to prevent mats. Right now, Harry has an easy-care short coat, but keeping that coat requires regular professional grooming.

Harry is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.
