Update on Penelope: We are very sad to update information on Penelope.  SCMR has decided to list her as NOT available for adoption due to a surprise diagnosis of advanced liver cancer, enlarged heart and kidney stones with a very limited prognosis. This inoperable condition leaves little promise, but SCMR will keep her in foster care and provide alternative care and as much love as possible for this sweet dog that came to us as a stray and deserves to have the best for her remaining time. If you would like to make a donation or become one of Penelope’s angels, to offset costs already incurred and future expenses, all contributions are greatly appreciated. Thanks for your support and prayers for our sweet Princess Penelope.

Hello...... My name is Penelope and I need a new home.  I was a stray, but now I am in foster care.  I am 8-10 years old, and weigh just over 5 pounds.  I’m still a little boney from being out there for a while, but once I fill out and my hair grows back, I will be a beautiful little girl.  If you need a love bug little doggie, please apply to adopt me.  I know how to walk on a leash, like car rides, and am doing great with my house manners.  I’m a little growly at times, but get along with other dogs.  I like sleeping in the big bed but also in my doggie bed on the floor.  I’m just happy to have a soft place to lay my head.

I'll be waiting for you in Eden, NC

Out-of-state adoptions are possible; however, the approved adoptive home is responsible for making the necessary arrangements to pick up their new little one.

To be considered to adopt me, please fill out an APPLICATION.

NOTE: SCMR DOES NOT adopt to homes with children under the age of 10 years or homes with Electric Fences.

You can help make a difference one dog at a time.

If you would like to sponsor one of our babies, we accept online donations via PayPal or send a check to us at P.O. Box 2005, Chattanooga, TN 37409. We thank you for whatever you can help us with. Any donation is appreciated and is tax deductible as we are a qualified non-profit 501(c)3 organization.

All our males are sent with BELLY BANDS!

About SCMR - Brunswick, GA

About Our Rescue Group...

Please understand that this is a volunteer effort and we all work full time in addition to doing rescue. Any help in speeding up the adoption process is appreciated. We will get back to you as soon as possible.

** NOTE** We do NOT encourage giving pets as GIFTS. However, you may pay the adoption fee as a 'gift' for your special someone, but we will require an adoption application to be completed by the adopter (recipient of your 'gift').

Our dogs come to us from various sources including shelters. We do not always know the full history of the dog, some have come from abusive or neglectful situations. We will share as much information on the dogs as we can with 'approved prospective homes'.

When an application is approved, the home check goes well, and all vet references and application information checks out, a signed and notarized contract is required to finalize the adoption process. MS Word and PDF versions of our Adoption Contract are available for download from our website,

We are dedicated to rescuing and caring for Maltese and other toy breeds (as room allows) who are either rescued from shelters, found as strays, or no longer wanted by their family.

We are a 501(c)(3) charitable organization so all donations are tax deductible. These little dogs need YOUR help now. SCMR takes in many "extreme-needs" Maltese and our vet bills can be very high. Every little bit helps. Additionally we can always use things such as dog beds, heartworm preventative, flea preventative, harnesses etc. Donations can be made out to SCMR and mailed to:

Come Meet Our Pets...

Our dogs are in wonderful foster homes, throughout the US, primarily in the southeast.. We are sorry, but there is no "shelter" available for you to visit.

We are committed to finding the best home possible for each of our little ones, so that they don't end up in a similar situation down the road. Out of state adoptions are possible. The new owner is required to help with the transportation of the dog though, as we will not ship them. Additionally, all dogs requiring transportation must have a crate or seat-belt harness for their safety.

Can't adopt? Consider being a FOSTER PARENT. All foster homes undergo the same screening that an adoptive home will. You must be committed to the potential lifetime care of the animals and be responsible for helping select and qualify their forever homes. IF YOU CAN FOSTER, please fill out a FOSTER APPLICATION.

Our Adoption Process...

To be considered to adopt one of our babies, please fill out an APPLICATION. A PDF version of the application is also available for download. Adopting any animal takes a lot of commitment. We require an application, reference check, home visit, and adoption donations depending upon the age of the animal and the medical expenses. Each dog has had all vaccinations, been dewormed, heartworm tested (and treated if necessary), dental (if needed), spay/neuter, and any other medical attention he/she needs. The adoption fee helps recover a PORTION of the money spent on each rescued animal.
We need COMPLETED applications; we cannot start the adoption approval process unless we have a fully completed application.

If you do not supply complete information on your APPLICATION, we do not have time to track it all down. Vet contact information on your application is very important, please include it.

PLEASE CAREFULLY READ THE BIO OF ANY DOG IN WHICH YOU ARE INTERESTED SINCE THERE MAY BE ADOPTION RESTRICTIONS. We do NOT adopt to homes with children under the age of 10 years or homes with Electric Fences.

Homes with fenced yards are given preference to those without (all other things being equal).
