Observations with Dogs: Sherwin is good with dogs – he has greatly enjoyed playing and snuggling with the resident dogs at two different foster homes. Sherwin is still working on meeting dogs while on his leash.
Observations with Cats: Really curious about the cat in his current foster home and sometimes likes to chase.
Observations with Kids: Gentle with kids. Sherwin licks faces. On two separate occasions, his fosters had visitors 3 years of age. Sherwin was good around the kids, and didn't pay them too much attention.
House Training Progress: No recent accidents
Crate Training Progress: Sherwin was fine in the crate at his previous foster’s home, but he has been having a more difficult time with being crated and left alone at his current foster home. A predictable schedule seems to help. He does well if you leave him in the crate with a peanut butter kong.
Location: DC area foster
Rescued From: Roane County, WV
Additional Information: Sherwin is a happy, playful boy. He is full of love and loves to give kisses. He is a true sweetheart! Sherwin adores playing and would be a great candidate for a home with another playful dog! He enjoys walks and romping around outside. He is an excellent snuggler and is happy to cuddle up with you at any time. His is a loyal companion who enjoys playing and walks as much as chilling on the couch. Sherwin has already mastered sit, lay and stay and is an easy going dog to have around the house. If you want a playful snuggle buddy, apply today to meet Sherwin!

If you are interested in meeting a dog, we require an adoption application. Visit to apply. If a dog has "HAS APPLICATION" listed, they are still available to receive additional applications but also may be in the process of being adopted soon.

If a dog has "NEEDS FOSTER" listed, they are still available for adoption. Information about our current dogs in need of fosters can be found here: and the application to foster is here:

City Dogs Rescue is a foster based rescue in Washington, DC. We do not have a shelter. We focus on local adoptions in DC and the metro area of Maryland and Virginia. CDR has a thorough adoption process in order to find the best possible fit for each of our dogs (we do not operate under a first-come, first-served model).

Prior to arrival, all of our dogs are spayed/neutered (unless specified) and given shots for Rabies, Distemper DHPP, and Bordatella. They are tested for Heartworm, Lyme, Anaplasma, and Ehrlichia. They are dewormed at least twice and given a health check by the vet.  Most dogs will have a house training accident in the initial days in their new home and we cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken or crate trained. Our adoption fee is $395 (including puppies) unless noted -- senior dogs are available for an adoption fee of $200.

We also update our Facebook page daily with new dogs.

City Dogs Rescue is a rescue, not a shelter, and our dogs are located in temporary foster homes in the Washington, DC metro region.  Adoption fee, home visit, and application required. CDR charges an adoption fee of $395 unless specified. This fee typically includes health care provided before adoption: all age-appropriate rabies, distemper, and bordetella vaccinations, flea and heartworm prevention prior to adoption, spay/neuter procedure, microchip when available, SNAP test for parasites, initial health check vet visit when going from the municipal shelter to City Dogs Rescue, and pre-adoption health care for dogs over the age of 1 year as needed. For puppies too young for spay/neuter: The fee is the same but does not include the cost of spaying and neutering.

About City Dogs Rescue DC

About Our Rescue Group...

City Dogs Rescue was formed for one reason: to rescue adoptable dogs in overcrowded and high-kill shelters where resources are severely limited. We want to offer a lifeline to as many of these wonderful pups as possible. Sadly, nearly all of the dogs that City Dogs Rescue takes in are just days and sometimes hours away from being euthanized, for no reason other than lack of space. By finding these dogs permanent and loving homes in the DC metropolitan area, we can enrich lives - both human and canine. We are excited to embark on this journey, and we welcome your help in any capacity – through volunteering, fostering, adopting, and/or donating.

Come Meet Our Pets...

All our dogs are located in Washington, DC either in foster homes or at City Dogs. Please email us to schedule a visit!

Our Adoption Process...

1. Fill out an Adoption Application.
2. We will have a brief conversation with you to determine your needs and preferences, find out about your daily schedule, and talk about your previous experience, if any, with pets.
3. If applicable, we will call your veterinarian to ensure that previous pets have been spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and well cared for. We may also call references listed on your application.
4. For renters, we’ll check with your landlord to ensure that dogs are permitted and that the dog that you’re adopting wouldn’t violate any size or breed restrictions.
5. We will visit your home to see the environment where the dog will live and answer any questions you might have. This is a great opportunity for you to get valuable input on how to integrate your new pet into your home.
6. Finally, we will enter into an adoption contract, and you will be required to pay an adoption fee which covers spay/neutering*, microchipping, vaccinations, and first initial vet visit.
7. Most importantly, enjoy life with your new companion!

* If you are adopting a puppy, depending on the age of the puppy she/he may not yet be spayed/neutered. In this case, you will be required to schedule an appointment for the spay/neuter procedure for your new companion and sign an agreement in which you agree to spay/neuter your pet within a certain number of days.
