My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Chibi is a 3 yr old, 13 lb red female Shiba Inu who has lived with another dog and small children. Unfortunately, her former family was misadvised by a trainer and used a shock collar on Chibi. Because of this she became unpredictable with her family and they chose to try to rehome her. Chibi loves to meet new people and will give them kisses but doesn’t like to be petted too long.

Here are our main concerns with Chibi and behavior issues that will need to be addressed with continued behavior modification after adoption.

Body handling issues: Chibi has a low tolerance for body-handling. From simple brushing, nail trimming and even petting.

Triggers:
Being picked up (cue the pickup and reward and release)
Petting too long – always stop before she seems uncomfortable. She previously expected to nip at people to get them to stop. This behavior needs to stop. She now runs after foster for more pets.
Guarding humans from other dogs- no issue with other people.
Chibi has come a long way in allowing her foster family to handle her. Strangers need to build the trust that we at DC SIR began.

All applicants must review each resource below prior to an interview for Chibi:

Resource 1
Adopters must have a thorough understanding of canine body language and the ability to identify a stressed dog

Resource 3
Build trust and work on creating positive emotional response to body handling

Resource 4

Resource 5
Chibi can be nippy or growly when being petted beyond her comfort. Why we never punish a growl and create a new positive emotion response to the stimuli that elicited the growl

Resource 6
Continue behavior modification classes with Chibi
Via approved reward-based trainer. Please do research and let us know who you select!

Other Dogs:
She can be reactive and growly with other dogs over attention from people. While Chibi is in a multi-dog home and is fully integrated with no separation from the other dogs, people unfamiliar with dog integration and reactive dogs should not apply. Chibi could potentially go to a home with a VERY friendly male dog. They must meet and the above requirements must still be met.

She was also fearful of riding in the car and we have worked on this weekly to create positive associations and destinations with car rides. See more here

Other than the body handling issues, Chibi is a friendly and loving dog that loves to greet people. Chibi's foster family has been able to make great progress with trust and handling. We are placing such extensive requirements to ensure she will go to an educated family that will continue her progress.

We are extending her adoption location from local to extended. This includes the East Coast, however, our extensive and detailed adoption process remains without exception. http://dcsir.org/adoptionfoster-forms/ You MUST be willing to drive out for a meet and greet if you move forward in the adoption process. If you would like to add this cute little pup to your family, fill out an application here: http://dcsir.org/adoptionfoster-forms/
