We all know how we get that awww feeling when we see an adorable young dog. We all know how we get that awww feeling when we see an adorable young dog. We all know how we get that awww feeling when we see an adorable young dog. Penny is the kind of baby who snuggles in, loves you up and then puts her head on your shoulder. She's so sweet (while being initially just a bit shy) and truly kind with every possibility open to her. That's the case unless a dog like Penny is in a high-kill shelter that quickly runs out of space or on the streets hiding in the shadows. We're so grateful for the efforts of our great rescuer in Tijuana, Mexico for saving Penny from abuse and certain euthanasia. She could see that her temperament was so sweet and her need so great that she couldn't turn her back on this very special girl. Penny was immediately brought to be vetted, given the appropriate vaccinations, spayed, granted a health certificate and brought to a dog-loving foster to begin her education as a cherished house dog.
When we think of rescue, our thoughts don't usually go onto the tough streets of Tijuana. But these forgotten dogs deserve our help every bit as much as their US counterparts. They all have been used for opportunistic purposes...to either breed and discard or to sell as a puppy to a Mexican mill or rich tourists. Virtually all of them have lived on the streets and survived by learning to be social. They love people because compassionate tourists were their means of survival. They can sit in any language and fit quietly into any scene to earn a treat or discarded meal.
This was the life waiting for Penny...just about 2 years old and approximately 10 lbs. This is such a perfect size to be able to accompany her family just about anywhere and then fit perfectly onto a loving lap. Dixie will always fit right in due to her great temperament. She is already starting to understand that sweet, cuddly and cooperative behavior makes great things happen in life. Penny was one of the extremely lucky very young dogs to show great promise in her socialization skills at a very early age. The US rescuers couldn't help but fall in love with Penny! We all had a clear picture of this very sweet and fun-loving girl in a forever Colorado home with a family that cherishes her for life.
As Penny becomes comfortable in her home, she will become a fuzzy ball of good-will that loves to please - the happier her family is with her behavior, the more she will shine with her accomplishments.
We would like to see Penny in a home that includes her in family time and activities (and of course some lap or couch-time would be perfect!)... and takes that extra step to participate in positive reinforcement obedience classes. These classes take a very smart dog like Penny and teaches them the skills to fit into a great family member that can behave appropriately in any situation.
Penny would also be a wonderful companion for active retirees who have the time and desire to be best friends with a truly adorable young pup. Penny would enjoy another gentle dog to play with ..she's so sweet and gentle as she puts her positive energy into enjoying the day with a fun friend.
Penny was identified as a Cavalier mix by her Tijuana rescuer. This is difficult to determine with certainty, but we can see the scruffy and very sweet Spaniel breed in this very kind dog. We'll update with a photo that does this very beautiful girl justice.
Penny is a non-shedding or lightly shedding dog with the cottony-soft hair of the Cavalier. She will require a commitment to periodic grooming and great nutrition (a salmon oil supplement would be great) to keep her hair so shiny, healthy and matt-free.
Penny is arriving on transport in Boulder in mid-May. Applications are currently being accepted for our very sweet girl with the dark, expressive eyes.
