My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Rusty: 10-ish year old soon to be neutered, male chocolate Lab, ~ 65 pounds

This sweet, gentle dog was found abandoned somewhere in Los Banos. He was, to be it mildly, a bag of bones with some fur. Yes, there was lots of fur missing from this sweetheart’s body! We snapped him up and took him to the vet for evaluation. All of his tests came back fine - heartworm negative, senior blood panel fine – but he did have an ear infection, which we are treating. Next came addressing his skin; he gets medical baths twice a week and he’s on an antifungal, prednisone and antibiotics to get him past his “itchies”. Already, after just a few weeks, his coat is growing in nicely and he’s clearly feeling better. He’s put on a few badly needed pounds already (no problem there!), and is just the nicest boy.

We don’t know for sure how old he is; he looks like an old dog but he moves really well and he has beautiful teeth! He’s clearly not been well taken care of, but he’s going on regular walks and slowly building up his muscles and his stamina.

But enough already about his physical condition; this boy is the sweetest Lab on the planet! He’s wonderful with other dogs, safe loose in the house (uncrated, although he has been crated before), has no food or resource aggression, gives lovely gentle kisses, and is a delight to have around. He’s totally housebroken, doesn’t seem to have any commands, but he does walk well on leash. He’s a very calm, mellow boy; nothing seems to faze him, at least that we’ve found so far.

Rusty is not yet neutered and we’ve delayed giving him his vaccines until he is healthier, but Lab Rescue will take care of both when the vet gives us the go ahead.

Rusty will be an easy dog to love and to care for. We’d like him to go to a home where he can hang out with his humans most of the time. His humans should be prepared to continue working with him to gain weight and build his physical fitness through regular walks and a healthy diet. His new family will also be willing to continue working on his skin issues, which are most likely allergies or yeast or possibly both. A home with other dogs would be fine. We don’t know what Rusty would be like with cats.

What Rusty’s foster says about him:

Rusty is easy to please and is happy to be in the same room with me. He gets along well with my younger male lab and the many other dogs he socializes with daily at the park. Rusty has a healthy appetite and is quickly building up his stamina and strength. He is housebroken and sleeps through the night in a dog bed in my room. He is truly a pleasure to have around.

Rusty will be neutered, current on vaccinations, heartworm free and on preventive, and micro-chipped when he goes to his new home. Rusty is located in Mountain View.

If you want to give a wonderful dog (who hasn’t had the life he so deserves) a wonderful life, contact Rescue Rep Debbi 408-613-2044 or dragonflydebbi@gmail.com.

(Please keep in mind we are all volunteers, most of us work full time and we all have personal lives. I do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient and I will be back in touch with you. When the dogs are in foster homes then it may take longer as we need to touch base with the fosters for updates on the dogs. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week and we do not have a facility that we keep the dogs housed in. They are scattered all over the Bay Area.)
