My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

It was a gift. You were a gift. A gift that made my life worthwhile. A gift that made life fun. A gift that filled me with music. A gift that filled me with love. A gift that inspired me to live on the bright side.” - from the book and character 'Gus' by Kim Holden
Is it a gift or a blessing when we find 'the one'; that sweet funny lovable four legged friend and family member who instills in us the desire to nurture and give love unconditionally? We think it is both a gift and a blessing! We have a beautiful young boy who has come a long way from timid and shy to vibrant and outgoing. Gus is a one year old brindle catahoula / Dutch Shepherd mix weighing 50 lbs. This darling boy is house trained by way of using a doggy door. He will probably need a little time and training to learn and adjust to any new routines or circumstances. He is also crate trained which would be a practical training tool for transition into his new home. Gus is very good on leash but will alert and try to chase squirrels but is easy to correct and regain focus on the joy of the walk. He gets really excited to go for his walks and it is a great way to burn of some of that little boy energy. Our sweet guy has learned a few basic commands and would love to learn more. He is eager to please and very treat oriented so training should be a fun and worthwhile adventure. Gus will need lots of really good chew toys to keep him busy and out of trouble. He has been known to do some inappropriate chewing but this was attributed to boredom and not having any room to run around at his previous home. With proper exercise and training he is sure to be the best well rounded pup he can be. Gus loves kids, he is very comfortable around them and very much enjoys spending time with little people. He is good with other dogs and has a great time romping around with a pal or two. He will, however, stand his ground if a fur sibling tries to bully him. He feels that all pups should eat out of their own food bowl and that it is rude to steal. His foster family does not have any cats so we really are not sure how he will react. His foster mom believes he would chase cats outdoors but would be okay with indoor cats because he is very calm when inside the house. Gus loves to be loved and give lots of love back. He will try to be close and comfy with his people, he'll even invite himself to sit on an unoccupied lap and expect belly rubs. He has overcome so many things that used to terrify him because they were so alien to him. He used to be terrified to come inside a house, now he makes himself right at home. He had no idea how to play when he first went into foster and now he will fetch a ball and actually bring it back....most of the time. His confidence has absolutely soared in the past few months, quite a transformation. He has, on occasion, submissively piddled when he thinks he's in trouble so calm and positive correction work best for this pooch. Gus is already neutered, up to date on all vaccinations, and current on preventatives. He is ready to be given the best gift he's ever had. The gift of a forever family who will love and care for him always. With love comes inspiration. With Gus comes the chance to live on the bright side.
