Bonded Pair
Update 8/22/16: Sara and Rachel are two gentle, bonded ladies who are still waiting for a home where someone will appreciate their quiet, easygoing ways. Their foster parents tell us: "Sara and Rachel are two love bugs. We have been taking turns getting on the floor to pet the two. They eat it up. Today I gave them a quick shower under the hose to clean up their fur and Sara so relaxed came right in and we found her laying comfortably on the couch. They certainly have made themselves at home. I took some time to get them to chase me around the house today then took out a small soft toy, which Sara grabbed quickly then Rachel took it and played tug a war with me briefly, then she shook it and mouthed at it for a couple minutes, I was so elated that they played. Rachel was so reserved when she first came, but she is getting quite comfortable and moving around the house independently. She watches the chickens from the sun-room so intently. Then I will break her concentration by talking sweetly to her. We have been teaching them both to sit and Rachel did for me tonight the first time I said it. Anything for a cookie! I peeked on them during some of the heavy hitting thunder last night and was surprised to see no reaction. Sara’s tail wags at all hours of the night. You think she is sleeping but you sneak in to the room and bam, bam, bam. Her tail is hitting the floor. She is a happy, go lucky girl."
Background: Sara and Rachel came to Sunshine from a Mississippi shelter where they had been dropped by their former owner. Sara, is an 8-year old Golden Retriever weighing in at 60 lbs, and Rachel is her “little 7-year old sister” at 44 lbs. She has big beautiful eyes that look like she has applied eyeliner! While it was evident that both had been abused in their past, as they would cower at times, they have begun to realize that people can be kind, and they are so appreciative of petting and soft words.
Sara and Rachel were adopted after waiting months through Sara's heartworm treatment in the South — only to find that their adopter’s resident dogs would not accept them. We humans do our best and find, at times, that the dogs often make the final decision on who is welcomed into the pack! Thus, Sara and Rachel, who have had too many changes in their lives, are once again hoping for their forever home. Their demands are few. They are easy-going, low energy and affectionate, and will be content to have a quiet home.
Sara and Rachel are very good girls with nice house manners. Belly rubs are a favorite thing! They ride nicely in the car and they really love the luxury of a soft dog bed, but will also make themselves at home in a large crate. They eat together (sometimes from the same bowl!) and hang out together indoors. They are beginning to learn what toys are about and are starting to enjoy regular leash walks. Rachel gets spurts of energy and loves to run a short distance, while Sara enjoys rolling on her back and plops down for belly rubs. As they learn that life can be good, both girls are smiling more often, and both have pretty smiles! Check out their video!
The girls are micro-chipped, spayed, and up to date on vaccinations. Sara and Rachel are going to be a wonderful addition to someone’s home and they are as easy together as one dog! They are fostered in southern NH and would love to meet you!

About Our Rescue
Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.
The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

**Please note: The fees listed represent a slight increase and are effective for applications received after June 1 2014. We regret the need to increase the fees for our dogs, but found it necessary due to the increased costs we are faced with for each dog's care and placement.
A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.
Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.
