Bentley is a very sweet, affectionate male Great Dane/Mastiff mix between 1-2 years old. He was found rummaging around outside and was very hungry and emaciated. After spending a week at another shelter where he was taken in, he was welcomed to FFGDR where he was promptly placed in foster care and put on a diet to gain more weight and get back on the track to good health.

A typical leaner, like most Great Danes, Bentley is very easy going and passive. He LOVES people and shows zero aggression with everyone he meets. He gets very excited and rushes to everyone he can in order to receive lots of affection and attention. Because of his large size and exuberance, many people are nervous around him – but it’s just the puppy in him, eager to please and earn praise. He is also just as excited about encountering and meeting new dogs. Bentley has not had much experience with proper dog socialization, so he barks and veers toward other dogs with gusto – this is not an aggressive habit, he just can’t contain his excitement and doesn’t properly know how to react. Bentley needs a home that is comfortable continuing to work on his socialization skills and reactivity. He is working on his manners and basic obedience commands (such as sit, stay, and down).

Bentley has not spent much time around children, and due to his size and energy, caution should be taken into consideration when introducing him to young ones.

Showing little interest in many standard dog toys, Bentley LOVES tennis balls – he could play fetch in the yard for hours on end. He also loves bone marrows, Kong’s filled with treats, and an occasional squeaky toy.

Bentley is crate trained, however he does not enjoy it and will try to avoid it at all costs. He will go in if you entice him with treats, but at his foster home he is trusted around the house throughout the night as he is completely house-trained. Another of Bentley’s least favorite things is a good bath: although he will tolerate them (again for treats).

When it comes to schedules, Bentley is very flexible and does not need to be kept on a rigid routine, although he does love a good walk now and then and pulls to meet new friends (canine and human). This is something his foster family is working on and could see improvement with his new forever family through a 6-8 week training course.

Bentley has never really been around cats, but does he does love to chase squirrels, so be careful when considering how an introduction with a family feline might progress. Very calm and gentle around the house, Bentley does not show any food aggression and is very well-mannered at gently taking treats. He’s also a huge cuddle-bug; loving to lay on the floor and snuggle!
