HELEN is a 6 year old spayed chocolate female Lab who weighs 51 pounds. When Helen first came to Lab Rescue she was in rough shape. She was emaciated and blind and was found walking along the highway. Once at the shelter in West Virginia, her sweet disposition was discovered and Lab Rescue was called to help. Helen is a chocolate Lab who's spent so much time outside that her coat is very bleached. Her initial veterinary tests revealed diabetes which is what caused the blindness. It is likely that it had never been diagnosed and never been treated. Helen has been under veterinary care since mid-April and has begun to gain weight. We have been controlling her blood sugar levels with Insulin and, initial glucose levels appear to be stabilizing. Helen is becoming the happy Lab that she always should have been. She loves toys! She loves people! She loves belly rubs! Because she can't see, she gets very excited when meeting other dogs and introductions need to be done slowly. Helen needs to go to a family with a fenced-in yard where she can explore and play around. She will need someone who can commit to giving her insulin on a regular schedule every day. She is approved for kids 10+.

Update: 6 year old HELEN wants to know if she can be your chocolate shadow. Helen loves all people, car rides, belly rubs, her squeaky babies, playing fetch, and has the softest ears. She has limited eyesight, needs two insulin shots for her diabetes and would like to be the only dog in the family. Helen has perfect house manners and will shower you with love!

Update: HELEN is the sweetest chocolate shadow. She has perfect house manners, loves the car, walks, all humans and her squeaky babies. Helen doesn't see very well from untreated diabetes and needs insulin shots twice a day. She's not a fan of dogs that get in her face, but loves her humans. She walks well on an Easy Walk harness, and is approved for town home living.

Update: Helen is enjoying the cool fall weather, with the sun on the deck, and maybe striking a few yoga poses. This girl is so perfect, easy and ready for her forever family!

Update: "Are YOU my mother?" Helen has some great news! She has been approved for cataract surgery (which Lab Rescue will pay for) to improve her vision! Helen has perfect house manners and is low key. She's not bothered by storms or fireworks. Helen loves to ride in the car and run errands. She also enjoys playing fetch at home. She is approved for town homes. Helen has gained the 20 pounds she needed to gain and her diabetes is under control. Now all she needs is her own family.

Update: Helen continues to thrive in her foster home. She loves the car, spending time with people, going on walks, playing with squeaky toys, and shadowing her foster Mom! She is now at her perfect weight and waiting for that special forever home to give her eye drops and twice a day insulin.

Update: Helen has reached the perfect weight of 60 pounds and is eligible for her eye surgery to remove a cataract from untreated diabetes. 6 yr old Helen is a dark chocolate shadow who loves car rides, walks, carrying a toy baby, squeaky balls for fetch, and following her foster Mom up and down the stairs all day. She is not afraid of storms or fireworks but, because of her limited eyesight not is not a fan of barking dogs who charge her. Helen's perfect home has someone home more often than not and a family who can commit to a schedule for insulting injections twice a day.

Update: Helen has gained 3 more pounds!! She's doing great in her foster home and having limited eyesight before her surgery doesn't stop this girl! Check out the video of her playing fetch!

Update: Helen is a true love bug and her Foster Mom feels she would make a great therapy dog, desk buddy, or RV companion. She loves to travel and be with her people. Helen is diabetic and has plans to have her eye surgery soon to help improve her vision.

Update: Helen continues to blossom with love and good food. This sweet girl is a car addict and loves to ride and travel. Helen likes to be around her people and loves belly rubs and ear scratches. She is not afraid of storms, takes treats gently, does not counter surf and doesn't bark or chew!

Update: Helen has gained 2.2 pounds in two weeks and weighs 53.6 pounds now! She loves to lie on the deck or close to where Foster mom is - her humans are her favorite! No crate needed for this girl and only needs a short walk to take care of business. We don't want to burn too many calories so she can keep putting on weight. She loves riding in the car and loves everyone who arrives in one. Her bleached out coat is almost gone and the color of her new coat is stunning!

Update: Helen is such a sweet girl. She continues to feel comfortable in her home and is perfect for her insulin shots and eye drops. She has relaxed so much since she first arrived. She loves to go for walks and walks beautifully with an Easy Walk harness. While in the house, she plays with her squeaky toys or just hangs out next to foster mom. She loves to follow you around. She's working on gaining weight so she can have her cataract surgery.
