Facts about Andre

  • Breed: Domestic Shorthair
  • Color: Orange Or Red
  • Age: Adult
  • Sex: Male
  • Hair: Short
Given his size and deep set eyes, Andre can look a little rough and tumble, but he is actually the original gentle giant. Look closely and you will see that Andre has chubby cheeks, a round body and soft paws. Open the door to Andre's condo and pet him and Andre will purr, wave his paws around and show you his belly-- truly a marshmallow of a cat. We don't know much about his past but it could not have been easy, because Andre will not yet come out of his condo to sit on your lap. He seems convinced that there must be monsters everywhere and that he needs to stay where he knows he is safe. Andre needs a friend to teach him that he is safe forever, and that if there are any monsters in the future, you will fight them together. Given time and that friend, Andre will become the confident cat he was meant to be. If you are willing to protect Andre from the monsters, please fill out an application and ask for Andre.

About Protectors of Animals

About Our Rescue Group...

We are a NO-Kill rescue and shelter for cats and dogs.

POA was formed in 1975 to rescue abandoned, abused and stray cats and dogs. Today we are one of the oldest and most respected animal welfare organizations in the northeast. POA is here to stay! You will not find a more dedicated, experienced or thorough resource for improving the lives of Connecticut cats and dogs. We confine our focus to our home state because this is where our infrastructure and resources reside, as well as our leadership.

Come Meet Our Pets...

Cat and Kitten Adoption Events and Open House every Saturday from 10 AM to 4 PM at our cat shelter: 144 Main Street, East Hartford, CT. Visit and interact with our cats and kttens in our feline playroom to help make the perfect selection for your home.

Petsmart at 5 Main Street, East Hartford, CT has a selection of our available cats that need loving homes. You can visit them anytime during Petsmart's hours. POA has volunteers every Saturday and Sunday from 10AM to 2 PM at this location to answer your questions and to help you start the adoption process.

Select adoptable dogs are shown at Petsmart in East Hartford the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month from 10-1 pm. Also select dogs are at Petco in Middletown the 2nd Saturday of each month from 10 am - 2 pm. Otherwise we would be happy to set up a private appointment for you to meet the dog who interests you.

Our Adoption Process...

We do have a screening and application process. We ask that folks fill out the easy 2 page Adoption Application at and e-mail it to the identified placement focal on the dog's bio,, fax it or bring it with you to our Adoption center any Saturday from 10am-4pm or during the week by appointment. Protectors of Animals may require a veterinarian check before any adoption.

One of our experienced Placement Team members will meet with you and show you the cat, kitten or dog you are interested in, or will guide you towards cats, kittens or dogs that are appropriate for your home environment. We will discuss with you the background of the cat, kitten or dog and what special needs or requirements he or she may have. We will happily take the time to carefully answer any questions you have or discuss any concerns.

POA does not charge an adoption “fee.” It costs POA anywhere from $100 and $400, or more, per dog or cat or kitten to make them well and prepare them for adoption. We are an all-donation organization and we rely on adoption donations to help us continue our work. When you adopt a cat or dog, we will ask for a donation. Our adoption donation information can be found at our website at
