Hello! My name is Zelda, and I need a new home. I am an Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler, and yes, my short little stubby tail is all natural. My current parents are not able to give me the exercise that I need so I’m looking for a new home.
I tolerate having a cat in the house, but I could live fine with or without one. I haven’t been socialized very well with other dogs so sometimes they will make me nervous but I have been going to doggy daycare and getting a lot better! I don’t like dogs that are very forward/lunging though.
I haven’t been around many infants, so I don’t know how I would be with them, but my previous people had a young boy and I loved to play with him. I love to play Frisbee and fetch! I’m doing better going for a walk while wearing my harness and I try to match the pace of the person taking me for a walk. Sometimes I just can’t help myself when I see a squirrel, though!
I will let you know when I have to go outside, and I am good about being in my crate for a while. I don’t like to be alone, especially if I know my people are in another room. My current people keep telling me I am a very sweet and lovable pup, just not right for them. Are you the right peoples for me? I hope so!

About Eastern Herding Dog Rescue

About Our Rescue Group...

Eastern Herding Dog Rescue is a small but mighty group that was founded in 2014 in Richmond, VA as the brainchild of Ashley Castro. A longtime lover of all things herding dog, she had been involved in Border Collie rescue since 2007 and general rescue since 2004 and helped rehome many canine companions. She made a plan to help her favorite group of dogs find their place in the world with the people that love them. Lucky for her she had some like-minded friends, and together they opened their hearts and homes to herding dogs in need.

We strive to set ourselves apart. Our foster homes are all trained in basic canine behavior and training techniques to properly rehabilitate our dogs and prepare them for their new homes. All of our foster homes use positive reinforcement training techniques to train our dogs and have firsthand experience with herding breeds. We have a behaviorist we partner with to assess our dogs, we enroll them in manners classes, and we appropriately socialize them in real world situations. We conduct phone and face to face interviews and meet and greets with potential adopters to ensure that the dog they're interested in is the perfect match and vice versa! We know our dogs best and want to adopt out the best dogs!

Our Adoption Process...

We require an application be filled out by anyone interested in meeting or adopting one of our dogs. We will conduct a reference check, veterinary check, and home visit before adoption takes place.

Our adoption fees for dogs are:
Under 6 months: $300
7 months - 8 years: $250
9+ years: $200

Our adoption fee for adult dogs covers microchipping, vaccinations, heartworm test, flea/tick treatment, and any existing medical issues the dog needed treatment for. For puppies under 6 months an additional $50 is charged which covers a spay/neuter deposit. This will be paid toward the vet of your choosing for the procedure or will be paid to Prevent a Litter if you are located in Richmond, VA. We cover the puppy shots up until adoption.
