Toby's Story...
What? “Toby” doesn’t look like a typical Sheltie or Collie? That’s because he is a Shih Tzu pretending to be a sheltie. This tiny dog was found chasing cars in the middle of a busy street in the Arkansas Valley one frigid evening. He was in a terrible predicament and he didn’t know which way to turn. The Callahans just couldn’t leave him, so they scooped him up, filthy dirty, cold, hungry and thirsty. They named him “Toby Tyler” after Disney’s orphaned boy, got him some food and water and he slept in his foster dad’s arms all the way home and through the night. The next morning, he had a bath and it was discovered that he was an intact male. That has been remedied. After no one responded to his stray ad, he went to the vet for a neuter, dental, vaccinations and micro-chip. Toby is a busy little guy. This young adult loves to wander the yard and play with squeak and tug toys. He adores the people in his life, is happy to greet company and even likes children. He followed a 16 month old visitor around, giving kisses at every opportunity. Toby tolerates the small female dogs in his foster home, but growls at a dominant male and a bigger female. It would be important for him to meet potential doggie friends as part of his introductions. Toby has obviously had some training. He seems to have drawn an invisible line across the step from the lower family room to the adjacent kitchen and will not cross that line. He will not lift his leg in the family room, but asks to go outside. If he is carried across that line into the rest of the house, he will lift his leg and mark territory. His foster mom and dad carry him to bed every night and then carry him to the family room every morning and have had no accidents. He should calm down now that he is neutered and the testosterone will dissipate from his system. If you are interested in this clever and sweet little dog, we do require a securely fenced yard. When he first arrived, he tried his hardest to dig under the fence and push his way through the gate. We also require a vet reference that is awesome. Please read the adoption information section on our website at www.pueblocolliesheltie.org and it should answer most of your questions. If that all sounds good to you, please move on to the online application. When we receive applications, they are screened by one of our Board members, reviewed by the foster family and then sent to our Director. Along the way, we will call or e-mail to let you know the status of your application. Thanks for meeting one of our “little interlopers.” We hope to have him in the best possible home by the time the New Year rolls around.

Why Adoption is a Great Option

Toby, a Pueblo West Shih Tzu dog was adopted! Here's how you can benefit by looking at adoption as an option to buying a Shih Tzu for sale in Pueblo West, or seeking a Shih Tzu dog from a breeder in Pueblo West.

  1. Rescues and shelter volunteers in Pueblo West already know the personality and tendencies of their pets. This means they can match you with the right pet. That will makes it much easier transition to owning a pet for yourself and your new pet.
  2. On average adoption fees are much less than you'd pay a Pueblo West breeder, or pet store. Plus most often rescue pets have already been to the veterinarian for a check-up, had a round of vaccinations, and are spayed or neutered. That is a lot of savings!
  3. You will become a hero, and give a needy dog or cat a loving home. In fact, there are even Shih Tzu breeders who help with Shih Tzu rescue. One puppy or kitten adopted in Pueblo West paves the way for another one to be saved.
